Oonagh got the Traders and Barbarians expansion for me for X-mas. It came with event card with die rolls on them. They are supposed to replace the dice with the explanation that they are statistically true to the dice. What they are supposed to do is ensure that the resources are doled out exactly as the statistics say they should, thus removing the random fall of the dice.

Despite never taking a statistics course, I understand the rationale behind their inclusion, but don't know if I agree with it. Somehow, I would rather use the dice and let them fall where they may. If I am on a 12 that keeps coming up and producing resources, then lucky me.

Anyone else have a take on this?

So the Traders and Barbarians expansion came with a deck of cards (I'm guessing a deck of 36 cards?) that you draw from instead of rolling dice?

It changes the game somewhat, and makes initial placement a bit more important. Then as the game progresses, later placements have to take into account cards remaining. If you have the chance to place on a 3-5-10 junction, do you do it if all of the 5s have been drawn already, for example.

Personally, I wouldn't use the cards, but I can see how it would appeal to some players.

Additionally, I bought a replacement set of resource card (original set was getting worn out) and along with that, I got a deck of event cards. Sounded cool, added random events to the turns, but they also were to be used in place of the dice.

Needless to say, I was disappointed as I wanted the events added, but still wanted to use the dice. The T&B expansion came with the same.

That's easy enough. If you want to use the cards, but still retain the possible outcomes that can be achieved with dice, just shuffle the deck after every draw.

Any reason you can't use the event, but ignore the resources part and use the dice instead?

I don't know much of anything about the game other than the KoDT homage "I have wood for sheep".

Unless you reshuffle the deck on each person's turn.

Edit: oh, you said that in a later post.

Those sound kind of ridiculous. I would stick with the dice.

On a related note, anyone else here play in the Catan Online World? I wouldnt mind playing some games with y'all, although I'm fumbling my way thru the UI. Dear lord is it horrible.
