Just went and did a quick runthrough of a review article of benzo type drugs metabolism, and I'm not seeing any derivatives opening up for non-prescription use any time soon.

Several have carcinogenic metabolites, others have very, very bad interactions with other dugs, and all have very bad side effects from overdoses.

If interested and you have access somehow, the paper was Benzodiazepine Metabolism: An Analytical Perspective, from the journal of Current Drug Metabolism.

Benzos are nasty drugs with a high addiction potential, which is worse for people who have an alcohol problem. It messes with memory and cognition. Also even if a person does not become addicted to it, it can create severe withdrawal symptoms when they STOP using it regularly.

Just because it sounds too good to be true doesn't necessarily mean it isn't. That being said, I don't think I'd be first in line to try it. Maybe second, though.

It doesn't just sound too good to be true, it sounds like a horrible, horrible idea designed at targeting a new recreational drug to individuals who don't need it. Alcohol without the side effects is, well, you guessed it, another drug. This is not modifying alcohol to moderate the side effects and toxicity, this is taking another psychoactive drug and calling it 'alcohol'.

Come on, man. They had it in 'Star Trek.' It's the future. What's there not to like (assuming no harmful physical side effects)?

Seriously, who wouldn't be for being able to turn a buzz on and off at will? Once again assuming they can actually make it no more physically harmful than alcohol already is.

Benzo's are the generally and highly interactive with almost anything drug champion as well. Squirrel Girl is being nice about it.

It depends on the benzo, but yes. Some have the fewest side interactions of almost any drug, some have a ton of side reactions- a lot of it depends on which of the cytochrome 'clusters' is primarily responsible for its metabolism. The paper I linked above also includes in depth analyses of the side interactions of a variety of common Benzo's.

True, I was too inclusive. I've been seeing a lot of the side reactions with drugs cases in my work, especially when I worked with the methadone programs. At first I thought the methadone-benzo interaction was the big problem, then I found out how some of the benzos don't seem to be safe to take with anything besides water.

Not a drug you want to open up to more people for more abuse than its already getting.

This is pretty much where my thoughts lie. If a substance can be crafted that will produce the "light buzz" effect, without being capable of producing the "sloppy, falling down drunk" effect, and has no drug interactions or harmful side effects, I will vote it a "good thing".

Is it possible? I dunno. I'm not the chemist. I just wanted to share the article.
