Atlanta's Transit System Changes 'Yellow Line' to 'Gold' After Asian Outrage

MARTA officials plan to meet with Asian-Americans on Friday to discuss concerns regarding the color-coded system.

Atlanta's transit system will rename a train route into the heart of the city's Asian community in response to complaints that calling it the "yellow line" showed a lack of racial sensitivity.

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority issued a statement Thursday afternoon announcing it would change the name of the line to the "gold line."

"The expressed concerns regarding the use of the phrase 'yellow line' will be addressed in the most expeditious and cost-effective manner possible," MARTA officials said in the statement.

The move to change the name to "gold" coincides with the demands of some advocates in the Asian community.

"Our thought is, why don't you change it to gold? It's really more of a 'why not?' question. Why not change it?" said Helen Kim, director of advocacy and education at the nonprofit Pan Asian Center for Community Services.

Naming it the "yellow line" was part of MARTA's color-coding the entire transit systems by using primary colors.

"There was absolutely no intent to confer any negative connotation through the use of any of the colors chosen," the statement released Thursday said.

Ah, o...kay? You know, I am fully behind changing some holdovers from the days back before people realized they were being asses, but...really? This had no racial connotations. Are we looking at removing the name "yellow" for the color in all arenas? Are children going to restricted to a hell of using "marigold" as their only crayon of that hue?

Actually, out here, where a lot of the original Chinese immigration took place, where the immigrants set amazing records on railway construction, where the central valley benefited immensely from the agricultural skills of the immigrants, where Chinatowns were usually the only safe place from racist white, red and brown skinned bullies, I could have seen that anger. Yellow was a pejorative term for many years for anyone with an Asian skin color. We grew out of that for the most part. Of course, being the Golden State, gold gets used a lot more frequently than Yellow in describing things and places.

Evidently a few Asiains have figured out how well frivolous claims of racism work for other minorities and have decided to hop on the bandwagon.

One of my asian friends has a joke about when God made the different races... one set of clay got over baked in the oven, one was under baked and one was just right.

On the one hand, I wonder how the timing works out between the construction of the MARTA line and the settling of the neighborhood as predominantly Asian.

On the other hand, Farskee, don't worry. Your kids will have Marigold, Canary Marigold, Marigold-Green, Sunflower, Marigold-Orange, Amber, and Lemon Marigold crayons, too.

They need to make a black crayon with flecks of gold coloring in it called "Bling-Bling."

A Chinest exchange student in my Chinese History class asked me what my name was. I told him "gwai lo." He laughed.

^ this this this this this ^

The true issue here, as always, is human nature, or rather the worst of human nature. The lure of getting more personal power or more personal wealth without any work or sacrifice overrides most peoples' logic and sensibilities, even if they deeply know better.

One question would be, does the Yellow Line go out to a predominantly Asian part of town?

Metro lines are very similar to trains helped constructed by underpaid and exploited Chinese Immigrants. Therefore, I propose that the metro path to Chinatown immediately be demolished and replaced with a marble pathway and a two Segway rental terminals on either end.

I'm withdrawing your asian card for subjecting your fellow asians to such a under powered way of transport... you can pick it up again by 1) driving like a maniac 2) giggle secretly at those who buy less than 10 pound bag of rice or 3) pimp out a rice rocket. >=P
