In the same way that filing an insurance claim after a car accident is?

Search me. I'm all in favor of taxes that shore up the working folks when they need it. I was curious how one who believes taxes are an unfair burden (as I believe Elmo thinks of them) can rationalize utilizing them.

The difference between unemployment tax and insurance is just that one is voluntary, seeing's how you aren't required to own a car in the course of one's pursuit of happiness and all. Taxes... well, it takes money to live, so some kind of income is required.

So then restitution to a harmed individual is immoral?

I'm thinking that's a question for you - I'm all in favor of social safety nets, especially in these times.

People who are already in the lower income groups are the hardest hit by the lack of jobs and they need the help.

Elmo - fine, good. Make sure you disclose to those donating money to you that you're refusing unemployment payments (I can't view your linked page).

That's more unemployment funds for me if I get laid off.

I didn't, and I regret it. I was too prideful.

During the potato famine in Ireland, uncounted men, women and children died because pride was so strong they would not accept relief efforts from the British who were raping their country. The soup boats sent to help out were not near enough, but going to them and getting the bare essential amount of food to eat to stay alive was considered traitorous.

I see that same level of stubborn suicidal pride in Elmarnieh. We'll miss you Elmo. You'll go quickly, your pride will not sustain you, your anger will eat you up faster than a normal person.

Many states have legislation that makes it illegal to drive without insurance. Would you refuse to collect on a collision claim because the State requires you to have insurance?

The underground economy where taxes are simply not paid is also illegal. There is no unemployment benefit for working in the underground economy.

I see those two as similar. Of course in California, not having a car or being able to drive is a lot harder than in the cities back east with superior public transportation options.

Swallow your pride, take the unemployment. Keep careful track of the money you receive and when times are good for you again, donate a similar amount to your local favored PAC.

Yea, but it worked out well for Bruce in the end.

Um... you did?

And its not *your* money, its your employer's. And it wasn't *stolen* it was paid into an insurance fund in the event that you lost your job. Which... it now seems that you have.

So get off your goddamned high horse.

Silly argument. Every employer calculates such expenses before they hire someone, it's part of the total cost of an employee. As such, it's the employee's money.

Like every tax. It's economics.

I think Elmo was saying he'd be fired for falling asleep on the job so he's doing things to keep his mind busy. He is likely to fall asleep because he got little sleep because he was robbed.

he is not fired nor likely to be.

of course I can't check FB from work so am not sure.

Do you really think the employers would pay the employees the extra if the unemployment taxes weren't required?

It is the employers money until such time as he gives it to the employee. The employer is legally required to pay the employee's unemployment insurance premiums, the only time the employee sees the money is when he gets laid off.

The employee doesn't claim the unemployment tax as income already taken in taxes, as he does with the other taxes. The employer claims it as part of his expenses.

I've worked for the same employer for over 20 years and haven't seen a dime of it, though I did use it when I was unemployed previous to that. Hopefully I never will have to use that benefit again.

I have no idea what he's talking about really. I can only go off the info in the OP.

I also cannot check FB from work. So, given the info he posted, I assumed that he was now unemployed, and trying to avoid collecting unemployment benefits when his savings run out in a couple of months.

As has been noted, FICA (social security + medicare) is paid 50:50 by the employer/employee. FUTA (unemployment tax), however, is paid 100% by the employer. PA state unemployment taxes work the same way. As far as I know, this is case in all states, but I couldn't say for sure.

That said, Beryllin is more or less correct. Companies tend to look at payroll as a single item, budget-wise. They don't really care (in that respect), whether the money is going to the employee or the government -- it's all just part of the cost of hiring an employee. If unemployment taxes went away tomorrow, would most companies just pocket the difference, or would they hold their payroll costs where they've always been and give all their employees a slight raise? Really, it's speculative. Any answer probably reveals more about the person answering the question than it does about reality.

A lot depends a lot on the particular company in question. Where I work, our unemployment costs are pretty small in spite of the bad economy, due to the fact that we've only ever fired one person in 25+ years, and I'm not sure he ever had to make an unemployment claim. So in our case, we'd likely just give everyone a tiny raise since it really doesn't effect our bottom line much either way. Places with high employee turnover and high unemployment rates might feel differently, though. I don't really know.
