It was a big of a catastrophe, but it worked out. I originally wanted to propose on our upcoming vacation, atop Machu Picchu, in Peru. After booking our nonrefundable tickets, Machu Picchu was struck by devastating mudslides. So as time gets closer, I kept hearing about how it'd probably be open around the 1st of March, but only to the most adventurous travelers. Even then, there's only limited passes and it'd be hectic. Well, after contacting almost every tour agency in the area, they all collectively stated that they wouldn't be doing tours until April.

So fast forward to yesterday. I had full intentions on buying her ring yesterday. My mother and I went looking around and I found something fabulous that I knew she'd love. My new plan was to propose at the annual pink ice K-Wings hockey game (K-Wings are a minor league team). We both go to hockey games all the time, so I thought I'd surprise her at the game over the mic in front of the whole stadium. I have some connections to make this happen, so I thought it'd be great. Unfortunately, I got a call from her only an hour before the game telling me that her daughter was very sick with a dangerously high fever. Being the understanding person that I am, I told her to be with her daughter.

Strike Two!

With this new ring burning a whole in my pocket, I couldn't resist proposing that evening at home. I bought a bunch of roses, balloons, and some even for her sick 3 year old daughter. I decided to hide the ring in the flowers. I actually hid the entire ring box down at the base of the flower bouquet. On the card, I wrote "To my lovely fiancée, El Amor De Mi Vida." When I got home she was on the couch with her daughter, who had a wet cloth on her forehead. I knelt down by the couch, though she didn't suspect anything until she looked down into the roses to smell them. Even after she gave me the look that suggested she thought maybe this was it, she seemed to second guess whether it really was. It wasn't until I said to look at her card that she realized what was in the box. I then said my words to her and we shared some hugs, kisses, and tears. It wasn't Machu Picchu, nor was it a big scene at a sporting event, but it was still a memorable, fantastic moment.

I'll say this; it's really hard to hold a secret like this for as long as I did. I knew I was going to do this months ago, but I shut up until now. When I went and got her ring, I couldn't resist just doing it on V-Day. Sure, it would have been nicer in Peru and I could have found more unique ways to do it, but it still surprised the heck out of her. She had no clue.

Way to go Roophus, a good story to tell the grandkids in thirty or forty years.
