They are now accepting apps to beta test FFXIV for those interested.

Really bummed about XIII now, since it's made to be such a linear game, with no open world, no towns even (you just shop at save points).

Still have a little hope for Final Fantasy Vs XIII, since Nomura has stated it will feel more like a traditional FF, with open world, airships, etc.

I'm not bummed at all. I don't want to play the same game 13 times, I want each one to be different.. and it's not enough to just change the battle system every time.

With a 39/40 review from Famitsu, and raving from anyone I know that has imported the title, I'm still excited.

I'm not really feeling this game right now. I had the same feeling when 12 was getting ready to be released, but it was for a different reason(I didn't like the changes to combat), but this one...I dunno, it's the setting more than anything. After 12, I don't mind changes to the combat system(though, this one seems to be a little more actiony that I would like, but since I haven't played it, I can't really comment yet), but this one seems like a single step below Phantasy Star in terms of setting. Which I don't like for the traditional more fantasy than sci-fi that Final Fantasy has been in the past. Again, I'll get it and judge for my self since, aside from Final Fantasy 11, none of the main numbered Final Fantasy titles have let me down yet.

One of the early reviews I read (Kotaku?) likened the game to FF6, which I know you love.

That would be nice. Like I said, I'll be getting it. I'm just not quite sure about it to be excited yet.

Has there ever been a FF game that wasn't linear? *scratches head*

Not *this* linear -

I've heard people who are playing it call it the "Running in a straight line simulator".

Looks an awful lot like Final Fantasy 10 to me. I kinda prefer it to not have branching paths that lead to treasure, to be honest. When they have those, I always wonder if I'm going the right way to the treasure so I don't miss anything and end up having to backtrack big time so I don't miss anything. Annoying.

Hey, I found another ff13 map:

Image

Oh wait, that's ff12.

Just because rooms have a few curves or off-shoots, doesn't make them non-linear. Still one entrance, still one exit.

FF12 had a pretty extensive overworld too, with various towns, etc.

The FF13 maps shown above...is how the entire game goes. No towns, no overworld. There's "Tunnel, tunnel, cutscene, tunnel, boss, cutscene, tunnel, tunnel, cutscene".

As long as it looks awesome, tells a good story and plays well, it's all the same to me. Whether I run in circles or walk a straight line through an awesome environment, it's still an awesome environment.

Yeah, I agree with Lenas here. As long as the game has a good story to tell, I couldn't really give two shits that there aren't any towns.

I've been following things a little here and elsewhere, without looking too closely for spoiler sorts of reasons. My general impression at this time is that I'll be slightly disappointed, given how much I loved 10 (for reasons I can't even explain) and 12 (single player MMO pulled off extremely well I think). I don't know if 13 is going to have much to offer in terms of novelty, or at least I don't think I like the way it has apparently gone, at least from what little I know of the game.

I do think the game will have high production value, however, and be quality enough that it will be worthwhile even if whatever they're going for with this lack of towns and such doesn't work out like they hoped.

I just hope to have a PS3 by the time it's out stateside. :P

I may just be getting impatient in my old age, but I'm glad this one doesn't have towns. I was getting a little sick of the "run around and speak to every single person you can find until you happen upon the next quest chain" mechanic. Definitely interested in XIII.

Also, hooray, got my chocobo xbox live avatar pet!

Finally have some 360/PS3 comparison shots. Apparently the 360 only renders it at 1024x576, while the PS3 is doing 1024x720.

Man, what a drag. I was hoping there weren't going to be substantial differences between the two so that I could continue my record of not owning a single PS3 game. Curse you Final Fantasy.

The upside being that on the PS3 version there won't be disc swaps.

Square has apparently said that shot wasn't legit and they claim both systems look exactly the same, something that added to the development time.

Though the PS3 does still render in a higher res, and wont need disc swaps.

i'm wondering if it has something to do with the way the images are captured, but in both pics there the 360 version looks much more jagged around the edges, maybe just a different type of aliasing.
