Why? They hired that particular lawyer, and he won their case for them. They knew what he charged, and thought the fee was worth it. Justice was served, they got the result they wanted, and a large cash reward. What's the problem?

Not to mention the portion of that fee paid the attorney that covers the cost of the experts that had to testify. I'm guessing by the nature of the situation, the costs for forensic computer specialists was rather high, and those costs are born by the attorney before the verdict. No win, that's a lot of money the lawyer is out.

I highly doubt that the lawyer is going to eat those fees, regardless of verdict.

Then your doubt is misplaced, as has been stated; a large percentage of personal injury civil suits today are handled on a contingency basis.
