I was thinking "a warning to unions in other districts: don't think your unionization will protect you from poor performance."

But that's probably why they had to fire everybody: individuals being held accountable for poor performance is most likely against the contract.

Hence why it's a warning to the unions, not the individuals.

It's up there with punishing the entire squad in boot camp. It encourages self-enforcement and peer motivation.

As for firing the whole district or not -- there's probably only one high school in the district, knowing New England population distribution.

Its usually bad for moral, but this isn't unheard of in government agencies when there is a change at the top... basically, everyone is "fired" with the ability to "reapply" for the now vacant position.

Weed out all the trash, save the ones worth keeping and let the rest go hang. Get new admin, and go from there.

Other than this one line, no one has mentioned the role of parents in any of this. Interesting. Isn't there a whole Hot Dog thread somewhere about parents responsibilities in rearing their children?

All nonsense aside, you can't have an entire school failing without placing the blame on parents. Likewise, you can't have an entire school failing without placing the blame on the teachers, either. There has to be some sort of cultural problem at the root of this. Again, since you can't change the parents, mixing up the school system is a good start I guess.

The parents are irrelevant to whether the teachers are actually doing a good job. Even if we halve the responsibility of a 52% dropout rate, that's still 26% to teachers. More than enough to fire them all and ban their union.

Teachers cannot stop a child from dropping out. 100% honus on the parents.

Not forcibly. However, they have immense influence over childrens' success. Children who see themselves succeeding are not likely to drop out.

100% onus on the parents is essentially saying teachers have no responsibility to do their jobs at all.

*Stop*? No. Discourage, by making classes engaging, relevant, and helping students succeed? Yes. Teachers share blame for failed students, even ones that fail by deciding to stop going.

It's not the teachers responsibility to keep them from dropping out. It's the teachers responsibility to TEACH them when the student is there.

Because we have started to view education as some federally funded baby sitting service is why we're in this mess in the first place.

You are all making assumptions of what the reasons are for the students dropping out. No where does it say the teachers are sitting on their hands passing the school day.

If my hypothetical kid drops out of school I would not blame the teacher but even if I did I'd make sure his/her butt got enrolled in another school and finished school up ASAP.

Of course we're making assumptions. The exact reason is different for every student. The assumptions, however, are safe ones based on the aggregate results.

I just want to know when and why education became a "right" with requisite "entitlements".

This is part of the issue as well.

US Law requires that children be provided an education. Unfortunately because of how the laws are written, it's the education system that ends up being in the middle. Because it is supposed to be provided, some parents completely absolve themselves of any responsibilities towards education. That in turn forces the schools to have to become "parents", because if they boot out kids or have poor success rates, then they lose funding or as this thread shows get fired. Things like the Americans with Disabilities Act only have made it worse, as some jurisdictions have interpreted that as having disabled kids main-streamed, which requires one on one tutors to be able to have anything successful happen, which is hugely expensive.

Basically, all the responsibility is on the schools, but none of the authority to actually affect real change.

While I very strongly support the idea that people should be provided a basic education, if they refuse to accept that education then they should be removed from the schools so they don't hold everyone else back.

No, see, you still don't get it. What makes education a "right"? Or, for that matter, what "entitles" any of you to go to college?

So 2 things. The first is that the people of the US have decided that education through high school is a right. It has been written into law and supported across the country by the majority. The second is that no one is "entitled" to go to college. But college isn't part of this conversation, so I don't see how that's relevant.

And because I suspect that you're still angling at some obscure idea, if I "still don't get it" then you need to do a better job of explaining yourself.
