Today reimbursement for my work dropped 21% I am looking at having to retire because it will cost more than I make to keep working.

I love my work. I always wanted to be a doctor, and about my happiest day was when I became one. I don't want to stop.

I guess I am lucky. Always lived below my income and saved a lot. I can afford to stop, but this breaks my heart.

That sucks.

It's it possible to change your practice in some way to minimize the reimbursement issues? I have assumed based on your posts that you run your own office/clinic, so I'm figuring you have a lot of control on that.

Alternately, could you work for another clinic and stay in the field but without those headaches to deal with directly?

:( Aw man. I'm so sorry. That really sucks. I don't know anything about the technicalities, but I assume you've explored all your options before realizing you have to quit.

So....whats next?

Missionary work? Doctors without borders or something like that?

Sorry to hear that SG. Is it palatable/possible for you to serve a higher percentage of non-medicare patients?

Come to Aust, we're always in need of good doctors with super powers! Plus it's great here for retirement, we actually have lots of good specialists who work 1-2 days a week and play golf or cruise down the river on their big boats on the other days. Alternatively there's lots of research universities here too if you want to go that way.

What's your specialty? Move your practice towards a concierge model if you're GP, IM, or FP.

Nah, its gonna go in automatically if the Senate can't get enoiugh votes for the deferrment of the cut, something they've been doing each year for more than 10 years since the bill was passed. linky

I am a physiatrist (rehab doctor). Not a common specialty in medicine.

So, for finantial purposes I am in the group of 'thinking' specialists. Thinking and figuring out what is wrong do not pay well. *wry grin* Also we tend to take patients who take a lot of time, so we can't run 10 through in an hour.

Overhead has already been cut to the bone. I went over this with my accountant, and this is the tip over point.

I have thought about going to another country, but my son needs me, so I am reluctant to go.

It's a sad commentary on medical practice in the US, that your specialty is marginalized when from my point of view, it's one of the most important.

Sadly everyone wants the quick fix, instead of true long term solutions.

I'm familiar with it.

That's why I wondered if it went through, because its been deferred by the Congress for so long. If they'd cut it in the first place, it wouldn't be such a big deal now.

Basically it comes down to overhead costs verses payment. The costs are now more than the payments. Cost can only be cut so much.

Meeting with our group manager this week. I am the oddball for this orthopedic group. I do triage (figure out what needs a little exercise and meds, and who has a major disaster in progress), non-surgical management, and figure out the confusing problems (per my son I am House without the grumpiness and addictions :-p). The group needs me....
