I am looking to get a mortar and pestle for my kitchen. I figure getting into the habit of cooking from scratch may as well go full bore or not at all.

I have been told that Ceramic is the best because it will help prevent the whole issue of flavor being retained by the bowl or the pestle.

What do you guys and gals use? Any recommendations on where one can be ordered from? I have already found ebay and amazon. Hell even craigs list had one... but I am kind of determined to buy a new one and not a used one. (not used by a random person from Craigslist at least.)

I use a coffee grinder.

Slow pulses.

To clean, rip up segments of a single paper towel, and run them through the grinder. when you see paper fragments, unplug the bastard, and remove them, and then wipe the interior, lid and blades yourself. NEVER EVER STICK YOUR FINGERS IN THE MACHINE WHEN IT'S PLUGGED IN.

Tips of the trade for you.

Enjoy.

I got a marble set from Cost Plus years ago...nothing like freshly ground herbs and spices!

Head on down to the Whole Foods store tomorrow, you have three in Las Vegas. They should have a mortar and pestle to meet your needs. If not, they can either order one for you or tell you where you can get one, they do decent customer service like that here.

Looking at the net, you have a whole slew of hippie markets in Las Vegas, most of them will carry at least a small mortar and pestle.

Standard Restaurant Supply has an outlet in las Vegas, and they are open to the public. They have several kinds of mortars and pestles.

1- Rynar: ooh.. coffee grinder... I may need to get two of those now, one for coffee and one for other stuff. And I figured it was never a wise idea to put fingers in a plugged in device. Unless it is an electric finger guillotine. Thank you.

2- Micheal: that would allow me to get it right away without needing to order online...I will check that out tomorrow before work. Thank you. I actually need to start shopping there for groceries in general. I am embarrassed that I did not realize there was one so close (Green Valley Parkway)

My pleasure. Like I said, slow pulses, working your consistency.

Yeah definitely don't buy a used one. You would be surprised how many people use them to grind up their legal and illegal medications.

Kirra, your signature line seems a little bit odd on the last post.

Are you truly suggesting that if Hopwin hasn't lost a finger, he should?

Coffee grinders are definitely the way to go for grinding dried herbs and such, cheap ones are fine, you can go more expensive with removable bits that can actually be washed as well.

One thing to make sure of when using various spices and such of the dried variety, in many cases if you toast 'em slightly it wakes up flavors and scents that are otherwise muted.
