Lydiaa is trying to get me drunk! :O

But I have started on the long road of the Ultimate Glade Beer Challenge.

Here's my rating scale:

<3 = loved it

:) = liked it

:/ = take or leave it/was okay

:( = didn't like it

O_o = I'd rather drink piss

So far:

Corona Light = <3 (smooth, good texture, nice n light)

Blue Moon = :) (light, smooth, a tad strong for my current tastes)

Labatt Blue = <3 (very smooth, light but flavorful)

Kilkenny = <3 (excellent beer! Probably my favorite so far)

Coors Light = :/ (okay taste, kind of a bitter aftertaste, little on the heavy side for a light beer, blue-turning mountains on label are cool)

Rodan, where abouts are you?

If you live in the following states, give New Belgian Brewing Company a try:

With it being Spring, this coincides with the start of when Belgian Trappist ales were traditionally finished aging. Their Abbey (Dubbel) and Trippel styles are a good foray into this style of beer. Be warned, they pack a huge punch alcohol content wise and a very strong taste, both because the malt plays not only smooth, but sweet and dense, the hops are generous and the alcohol content provides the dry finish.

Best to drink out of a snifter.

If you are even luckier and live within distribution area (about 14 states last I hear) of Boulevard Brewing Co. from my hometown of KC, try some their Unfiltered Wheat, their trademark. Their Zon, the summer season, which is a Belgian Witbier brewed with wheat malt, coriander and orange peel is probably one of my favorite summer brews of all times. Alternatives would be Hoegaarden, Blue Moon, and the best Wit I've ever had is Southamptom Publick House Double White.

Other great styles I enjoy are Saison and Lambick Fruit Beers. Lambicks are close to Wit, and Saison are copper colored ales that I would classify as close relatives to pale ales.

The Austrailian travel nurses I've worked with took great offense to Foster's "It's Austrailian For Beer" US advertising campaign becuase they said that there's far better beers being brewed in Austrailia.

I'd say you and I have similar tastes in beer, so here's things to look for:

Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat (relatively easy to find, similar to Blue Moon) = good
Leinenkugel's Berryweiss (hard to find, seasonal, but it's a purple beer) = very good
Leinenkugel's Honeyweiss (medium rare, non-seasonal, and what I served at my wedding) = better than good but not mind melting
Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy (damn hard to find, awesome, and totally worth it)

There are other beers near and dear to my heart, but Leinenkugel's is first.

Erdinger (had a ranger in my guild named Erdinger Weissbier in EQ)
Franzeskaner (spelling may be wrong)
Fat Tire (good)
Blue Moon (good)

That's for the light/wheat beers.

Raspberry beers, Lambics, Blueberry beers are all good. It's easy to find the chocolate beers and think 'Sounds interesting' but they are more often than not a disappointment.

Having a stout with anything besides a nice hearty beef / lamb / etc. seems wrong.

Guiness or Mackeson's for good stout, however. I'd say Mackeson's > Guiness, but doesn't have the recognition.

You can often find some good homebrew stout among the geek, roleplaying, MMORPG culture.

Ask your friends and someone may say 'You buy the supplies, I'll supply the brewing equipment'.

As you can tell from this thread young beer drinker, not only are there a lot of different beers, there are at least eleven opinions for every ten people talking about them.

Try as many as you like, in moderation. Always be open to a new beer, you never know what will tickle your palate.

But remember, one and done is a valid concept for beers that don't interest you. That is where Rynar's variety six-pack concept makes a lot of sense.

IMHO beer is best when it is almost indestinquishable from an over used motor oil.

Do you like coffee Kirra? More importantly do you like strong coffee? If so, then I would recommend trying a porter or stout sometime. You can also start with a black & tan (half guiness/half bass ale), which we generally refer to as "training stout".

Actually, it doesn't. Like 125 a pop for the Draught. The Extra Stout has 150ish, but I personally prefer the Draught anyway. Guinness draughts (the bottle or can with the nitrogen widget) is one of the lower calorie beers out there unless you drink a light beer, but I find most light beers lose taste along with calories...

There is one obstacle that ensures I will never become a beer drinker. After some trial and error and relying on other people's knowledge, I determined that I don't like the taste of hops. I've since overruled a few protestations that I could acquire the taste with the simple query, "But why should I acquire something that I don't need, and costs money?"

So I stick with liquor when I go out drinking, or go out of my way to keep some good hard ciders (read: Not Hornsby's, which I've dubbed "apple-beer") stocked for more casual home-bound drinking occasions.

Nationally, you just can't go wrong with Sam Adams. The only Sam Adams I ever really disliked was White Ale, and I haven't seen it in ages. I don't think it's even made any more.

Rodhan, if you're in WV you might be able to lay your hands on some Great Lakes Brewery stuff from Cleveland. Dortmunder Gold is my favorite, but anything they make is good.

I have on occasion drank coffee to keep me awake at work, and then.. Blacker the better and strong. Porter? Hmmm will have to try that!

First, I'm not actually trying to convince you to drink beer, just correcting what appears to be some misconceptions that you have.

There are TONS of different types of hops out there, each have different flavors. So saying you don't like hops is like saying you don't like plants.

Additionally, there are many many beers out there that use very few hops (some even none) so if it's only the taste of hops that's stopping you, there may be some beers that you would enjoy. I'd suggest trying some of the belgian ales. They typically are very lightly hopped, and both smooth and flavorful.

Oh, I don't have some burning vendetta against beer. So I'm not averse to people pointing out things that they think I might like (especially if they're buying or offering a sip of theirs or something). I just have yet to find somebody be right. =P

It's like if you guys were known for umm.. budwiser as your national beer?

Fosters use to be good back in the 70s (or so I've heard) and then other premium stuff came out and the sales went down. So some smart dude came up with the idea of exporting it to the US and promoting it as "Australian for beer". Funny thing is, it is no longer sold in australia, unless you go to one of those specialist alcohol seller place where you can get weird beer from around the world.

Kaffis, I'm with you on beer. I hate the smell so won't even go near one. I'm more a white wine girl...

By the way, there is no such thing as "drinkability" except in the sense that what's drinkable to you isn't necessarily drinkable to me.
