If you aren't watching it, please don't go on about the waste of time, money and obscene commercialism it represents. We know all that already.

Up, best animated picture, won't take the bog one though.

Hurt Locker, Best Picture, because too many people hate Cameron and Tarantino (for not casting them?)

All I know is I am going to be very very very disappointed if Christoph Waltz does not win best supporting actor.

There are more actors than directors in the academy.

Therefore, actor films - like Boys Don't Cry - are more likely to win than director films.

Hitchcock's Oscar status? Practically non-existent.

Also, movies with a younger appeal are less likely to win - because there are more Mickey Rooney's voting than say Ellen Page.

Hurt Locker is likely to get it, but Waltz deserves it and I think Basterds had a good shot given the disadvantages it has.

Its all crap. Avatar should have swept.

But I guess the hatred for Cameron runs pretty deep, in that a movie that almost noone saw takes the honors over the top grossing movie of all time.

Disappointed that Hurt Locker took Picture and Director. I don't believe Avatar should have taken the awards (and arguing that it should have because it's the highest-grossing film opens up a disturbing definition of quality that I don't want to pursue), but I wish it had gone to another film.

I had never heard of Hurt Locker until it was mentioned in an article about "OMG ItsGonna win all the Oscarz!"

I take that back, I heard about it prior to that article from a friend of mine.

Avatar should have had Picture and Director. If not that, then Tarantino for Ing. Bast.

We've been trying to see it since it was released, but the video store only had one copy of it. Obviously they thought it wasn't that great....especially considering some really stupid movies have like 20 copies.

I'm very glad Cameron didnt win based on everything I've read about Avatar.

I have not seen Hurt Locker yet but I have it from netflix sitting on my desk waiting for a free night. I've heard of it since it came out. The local movie critic here at work had only great things to say about it so I've had it in my queue since before the oscar buzz.

Yeah no doubt! First his hair looks like he wore a ball cap all day, and then it was like he had some vendetta against the boys on stage...he looked really mad. Wondered if maybe there was some behind-the-scenes feud or something.
Clooney sure was unable to contain his pleasure when he got talked up later though. Did you see the self-satisfied smirk on his face?
I never really had an opinion on the guy one way or another until last night....did not get a good vibe from that one.

I firmly believe that you can't comment on who "should have" won if you haven't seen all of the performances.

Glad to see Avatar didn't sweep. It's nothing more than a technical marvel.

Would have liked to see District 9 win something.

Ecstatic that Jeff Bridges finally won.

District 9 or Up should have received best picture.

Well I believed they would never give an award to a fantasy or sci fi movie, but Lord of the rings squeaked one out. If anyone company deserves Best picture for an animated its Pixar, and should have had it a few times already.

I definitely agree. Well, you can comment that a winner shouldn't have won if you've seen at least one other entry that you believe topped it.

I also agree on Avatar and District 9 -- Avatar was well deserving of the technical awards it received, though I think District 9 could easily have been justifiable in them, too.

I haven't seen Hurt Locker, but the small part of me that isn't against politicizing the Oscars is glad that we got a small-budget winner rather than continue to reward and endorse the big-budgets that are approaching billion-dollar projects these days.


My cynical side agrees -- the instant they admit that animated movies can be BP is the day they vote themselves out of the high pay-grades; compare voice work pay ranges to live action acting.

I'd agree, except that most animated movies now use big name live-action stars that probably ask for similar salaries even to do a voice...

The Hurt Lock is a politically appropriate winner. It's a very good movie, but District 9 and Up were better.

I haven't seen "The Hurt Locker" (and nothing about it interests me, so I probably never will), so I cannot comment on how much it deserves to win (or doesn't, as the case may be.) Up, however, was quite possibly one of the most amazingly heart-touching movies I've ever watched.

District 9 was unique, and well done. When the movie was finished I wasn't sure what to make of it, but after some thought, I really liked it. The fact that it required some thought to puzzle through my opinions of it made it worthy of Oscar consideration, I think.
