OMG I found it!

Apparently, Kilkenny Beer has been out in the US since January incognito as Smithwick's.

It's a Guinness off-shoot, but I don't care for regular Guinness (ranks a :( on my scale)

I'm running out of room on my paper for all these beer suggestions. I may have to just impose a cut off point.

I agree. She has impeccable taste. Especially in men.

So, I told my brother next door of my plight, and he sympathized (giving him the free beer I was done with helped too, I'm sure).

So much in fact, that he recommended one of the best beers I have ever tasted: Molson Canadian. Definitely ranks a <3 for me.

Say what you will about Canadians, but they make damn fine beer.

Also, you might like some certain types of beer cocktails:

Depth charge shot drinks like Flaming Dr. Peppers or Irish Car Bombs are fun, but not really about taste.

Try these two.

Black And Tan (Half and Half)

Harp Lager or Bass Pale Ale half on the bottom, Half pour of Guinness or other dark stout on top. You can pour Amaretto in the middle.

Michelada:

Take frozen pint glass. Line the rim with chili powder wetting it and dipping it. Add a pinch of chili powder to the bottom.

Pour a beer like Dos Equis Amber or Tecate into the pint (ensure beer is extremely cold) while also adding about a tablespoon or less of lime juice. Top with a few drops of either Worcestershire or Tabasco Sauce and stir very slightly. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Go sit in the hammock and enjoy.

Young man, there's no need to feel down
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground
I said, young man, 'cause your in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy

Young man, there's a place you can go
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
They have everything For young men to enjoy.
You can hang out with all the boys.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
You can get yourself clean
You can have a good meal
You can do whatever you feel.

Young man, Are you listening to me
I said, young man, what do you want to be
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams,
but you've got to know this one thing.

No man, does it all by himself
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf
And just go there, to the Y.M.C.A.
I'm sure they can help you today

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.

Young Man, I was once in your shoes,
I said, I was down and out with the blues
I felt, no man cared if I were alive
I felt the whole world was so jive

That's when someone came up to me
and said young man take a walk up the street
There's a place there called the Y.M.C.A.
They can start you back on your way.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.

To step on Raf here, there are lots of variations of the "Black and Tan". Two of my favorites are a "Half and Half" which consists of Guinness poured over Harp, the other is a "Red Velvet" which is Guinness poured over hard cider.

Um, I think we are known for Bud as our national beer, sadly.

I just realized that no one has mentioned Pilsner Urquell. It's the original Pilsner. Basically what every non-dark beer aspires to. :)

Man, now I'm really thirsty, crap.

I picked up a 12-pack of something called "Taurino" from the local Fresh and Easy the other day. An El Salvadoran beer - no clue why, must be some export-policy decision, but there are all sorts of weird beers from El Salvador around here lately. It was OK, better'n the last one I picked up.

But, really, try Pilsner Urquell. It'll be expensive, but worth it.

I've gotten those from FnE, mostly because they're so cheap. Like $6.99 for a 12 pack? Great for parties; very similar to Coronas.

Wouldn't drink on the daily, though.

Googling reveals that Taurino is actually FnE's private label brand beer? Hah.

Yeah, yeah, I put in the price in my head while I was typing, forgot to hit the keys. That was the whole point - it was dirt cheap, $6.99 sounds right. One of those beers that really needs to be cold, not just cellar-temperature.

Edit: Man, the things you learn. I now have this thread to thank for finally figuring out where the term "lager" comes from:

The Wiki article on Pilsner wrote:
Bavarian brewers had begun experiments with the storage (German: 'Lager') .... of beer in cool caves using bottom-fermenting yeasts, which improved the beer's clarity, flavour, and shelf-life.

Oh. So, lager, as in storage. But, that's an older usage; a lager today is a camp. As in, prison camp. So, like Stalag, or the Russian Gulag (State Administration of Camps). Prisoner storage!

Sorry, just had an epiphany. Never made that connection.

Ok update:

Foster's = :)

I wasn't sure what to expect given some bad reports here, but ended up liking it. Nice, effervescent texture, with a light flavor. Only gripe from me is that is seems to have a strange, metallic bite to it (but that just may be due to the fact that I am drinking it from one of those pint-sized aluminum cans). EDIT: Also, it has a nice, bready/yeasty aftertaste that I like.

Next up: Yuengling Lager
