The Playstation Move!

Yes, serious . . . The Playstation Move. Official.

Spoiler:

Don't care for the big blue ball on top, but otherwise, sharp-looking controller(s).

Other than already announced/demoed games, there will also be the games you would expect from a motion controller (i.e. a crap load of sports-like games). More to be announced in the near future, I'm sure.

Price: Not specified, but announced at "under $100" for the Move, camera, and game bundle.

Meh. Still haven't seen any reason to get excited for this or the Natal personally. Will have to see more games.

So far, pretty much . . . with blue balls.

Something like this, tho, it's the software that makes the difference. Which means I will probably be a late adopter (if at all) once the "Mii Too!" effect wears off.

Want to play with my Blue-Balled Wii?

They truly have no shame.

I'm wondering if Nintendo has some patent somewhere on the form factor. I would laugh my *** off if they did.

Not sure. Like I've said before, I'm not familiar enough with copyright laws to make that kinda call.

I would say it's different enough that it wouldn't break any laws, but that's just a guess.

I do like the fact that it's all wireless, and the Move-chuck is not attached to the main controller. I bet it vibrates, too . . .

I'd have to imagine if they did, Sony wouldn't have blatantly copied the wiimote. I mean, they didn't even try to hide it.

So Sony is attempting to get the gaming demographic to shake their blueballs?

Too late Sony. Too late.

It depends on how the patent was worded. Nintendo probably could have patented "a gaming interface device designed to be held in one hand and leverage the familiarity of entertainment devices' remote controls, which can be paired with a second similar device for the left hand. Control is derived from the use of buttons and triggers on the top and bottom of the device(s), and via motion detecting devices within the controller which include the ability to determine the location at which the long axis is pointed."

That's typical patent-speak as far as permitted vagueness, and the Move would clearly violate it. =P Now, I'm not bothering to look up Nintendo's patents, I just think it'd be funny (and forethinking) if they had filed a similar patent for the Wiimote and Nunchuk.

As for Sony blatantly copying -- the console industry is well known for people either doing poor homework, or trying to slide something through and either argue the patent or hope the patent-holder forgets they have such a patent (not unheard of; these large companies file so many patents...).

I think that sums it up.

I don't play with Nintendo's gimmick-in-a-console, why would I pay attention to it on the PS3?

Yeah I'm not liking this new motion era we are in. MS and Sony are just trying to follow in Nintendo's footsteps (albeit taking different approaches). Too little too late, guys.

Like FarSky said -- gimmicks emulating gimmicks, just with shinier packaging.

EDIT:

Found a link to their proposed line-up of games -- Link

Some of them look vaguely intriguing (the archery one I really would like to play around with at some point), but most look like shovel-ware. As someone in that thread said: "Oh God Nintendo, what have you done?" :P

Gimmick or not, it's made an assload of money for Nintendo. Brando-sized assload.

True.

And to be fair, the Natal and Move will have their market, as well. I'm just not expecting a Wii-scale phenomenon.

Any smart consumer will see them as obvious Mii-Too attempts.

Now, I could be wrong. They cold end up catching on wildly and being the next big thing. If so, more power to them I say.

Good god the voice overs in some those games are truly awful.

That's the the thing that would draw me in the most to this (well that and HD gaming), whoever at nintendo that though having a cord between the nuncuck and wiimote was a good idea needs to be smacked up side the head, same goes for the person that though having a cord to plug into the wiimote for the classic controller was good idea too.

It saves battery power.

On that note, I'd get used to the idea of these controllers. Nintendo made the analog stick and the vibrating controller an industry standard after the N64. The wii-mote is going to follow suit within two years.

I sincerely hope not. Motion controls are horrid when it comes to actually doing what you want it to do. I was not impressed with any Wii game. I will give up all gaming and commit suicide if all games move to motion control without the option to play traditionally.

I find it great for some things, not so great for other things.

I think I'd liken it to being the mouse half of mouse + keyboard. It's pretty similar, at least. Take the benefits of both, don't give up on old tech, and win.

If anything, I hope that as more time passes and more companies get involved, the gimmicky uses will get dumped by the wayside, just like I haven't (personally?) seen much mic use in DS games after the first bit of it being popular. Not for big name games, at least.

I used the mic on my DS for two games. Lost in Blue and Mario kart.

Well, Sony did have it under development before the Wii was announced anyways. (Sony has a patent filed December 2004 for use of a magic wand controller that works with the PS Eye).

Still not particularly interested in it though.

Ah, so it's more accurate to real life, where your balls are only blue part of the time.
