It's a sad sad day, my 1st gen Logitech G15 keyboard is semi dead now, I accidentally spilled soda on it and now 4-9 on the num pad don't work, which is odd because I didn't spill the soda near the num pad, it was over on the center/left side of the keyboard, and sadly the newer gen G series keyboards suck so I can't just easily replace it with a newer model

Did you disassemble it and see if you can clean it up? I've salvaged keyboards from such situations in the past.

No, I haven't tried that yet, probably worth a shot, though i'm guessing since the keys that stopped working aren't the ones that got soda on them I may have fried some of the electronics and not just dirtied the keys contacts.

That is certainly a reasonable assumption, but it's still worth cleaning. Keyboards and other such devices (mice, game controllers, etc) operate at very low voltages and currents. It is eminently possible that the dried residue from the soda has simply altered the circuit rather than frying something.

Most keyboards have a sealed diaphragm made of rubber or some other flexible plastic under each key. The key sits on top of that thing and depresses the actual contact through the rubber. I would imagine it's sealed for exactly the reason of incidental spills.

Anywho, if something electrical did get damaged, it's going to be hell repairing it. I would say remove the keys that got spilled on and clean them with rubbing alcohol. Inspect to see if there is any coke dried and sticky inside. If there is any residue, the alcohol will remove it. Do you notice the action of the keystrokes being hampered or impeded?

Be cautious about removing the shift keys, the space bar, caps lock and any other long keys. These often have a thin metal articulating guide which gives the key its linear motion and provides stability. The problem with it is it makes putting the key back a *****. You have to simultaneously line up the key with this guide and the key contacts which in some designs is an absolute nightmare.

I had a keyboard that died that way too, turned out there were some tiny cracks and the soda getting inside changed the pathways. Nothing liek pressing a key and not knowing what you were going to get. I still remember I could output an "f" with both the "f" key and the "k" key.

/mourn the loss of the things we really like (I mean our electronic toys).

Well it didn't favor the bold this time :p

Now to see if I can find another 1st gen G15 on ebay or something, or maybe a G11 since that's just the G15 minus the screen which I honestly never use except to have it in clock/date mode.

Did you have a problem with the paint wearing off the tops of the keys on your Gen1 G15?

Nope, actually I don't even thing there was paint on any of the keys though, just seemed to be colored molded plastic with translucent white plastic for the letters/numbers/symbols so they could light up.

Ahh...

The first one I had... the paint wore through on the more frequently used, and fairly quickly. I remember reading about it on the web, and the logitech forums were full of other people complaining about it as well.

Fortunately, they replaced it and I never had that problem again. I think I might still have it in a closet somewhere. I stopped using it in favor of a smaller form factor when my PC gaming dwindled to zero.

Well I think I found an alternate replacement keyboard at least, fits my criteria of at least 3 key wide custom key area to move WASD over and has blue lighting to go with the rest of my computer, only downside is it's a bit on the ugly side so IDK, may bite the bullet and buy a used G15 thru amazon/ebay.
