Hey all.

I'm starting up a workout program and I'm interested in using Protein drinks as part of my post-workout routine.

I ordered a full case of ABB Extreme Speed Stack energy drinks (these are awesome)....$40 for a case of 20 drinks.

I also ordered a full case of ABB Pure Pro 50. These suckers are expensive! They're a drink with 50 grams of whey protein...a case costs $42 dollars but you only get 12! Thing is these drinks are easy as hell to drink and go down smooth. I actually kinda like 'em!

However, is there a less expensive alternative for Protein shakes? These things are pretty ridiculous..I thought they'd be more like $40 for 20...and these prices are after the "preferred member" / "bulk order" discount.

You can get a 5lb container of whey for about 40 bucks. It'll last you for months if you do a scoop a day like I do.

I would say dont believe the hype with the performance drinks overall. Whey is a nice little supplement post workout, but make sure you're getting the vast majority of your nutrition from whole foods.

I like to put a scoop of whey in my morning oatmeal and then after a workout I sometimes have a simple shake of milk + a scoop of whey.

I personally order from here and never had a problem with them:

Specifically I get Optimum Nutrition Strawberry 5lb:

Love the flavor although I hear the chocolate is really good too.

I use Body Tech right now. I've used Gold Standard before. BSN is another good brand. Look for contents with low amounts of sugar (Don't use CellTech, you'll just get fat) and low fat from calories. Whey isolates work the best. I mix with skim milk, even though I'm somewhat lactose intolerant. You should have about 24g of protein per serving.

I consume a shake with 5mg of creatine monohydrate 30 minutes before lifting and another shake immediately afterwards. I was taking a double serving afterwards, but I started to switch by getting more protein from foods rather than shakes.

By far the best flavor I've had was Gold Standard Natural Chocolate. It was very rich tasting. A $45 5.17-5.22 lb (depending on the brand) container lasts me at least 6-8 weeks so it's much cheaper than any other method.

Addendum. I just mixed up a shake. What I use is Bodytech Pro 24 Chocolate Mint. Most of the major brands are good stuff, just steer clear of ones with excessive sugars.

The Optimum Nutrition Dash linked is good, I've used it before. Cookies and Cream, Natural Chocolate or Strawberry Banana are good flavors.

You can make all sorts of concoctions adding in fresh fruit, ice, oatmeal etc in a blender. I used to throw in a raw egg, too. It made it taste very rich.
