Lineage II was enough Korean-style MMO for me. Loved the pretty looks (even though everyone basically looked alike--although Sassandra would probably say it got better with the expansions), hated the grind, and I've never been a fan of PvP-reliant content. A game's got to have a better blend for PvP and PvE content to hold my interest, and the Korean games just don't seem to have enough story for my tastes.

I've gotten my ranger up to 13 and so far am kind of liking the game. Quite possibly will end up putting it down at the end of the initial month's worth of gameplay, but it has already impressed me far more than did Horizons, Pirates of the Burning Sea, LotRO or DDO.

Picked this game up on the weekend and happy to admit I'm now addicted. Game play wise, it's got the graphics of Lineage, the questing of wow and it's ease of play is somewhere between EQ and wow.

You will be able to solo in this game provided you take up the alchemy trade skill, however grouping is where it's at. (unless you're one of the solo classes) It's not as easy as wow and you do lose exp when you die (3% upon death, regain 2% at soul healer or a rezzer, lose 1% permanently). I'm currently sitting at level 17 (max 50) and dying hurts slightly, so I can only imagine what it will be when I hit the cap (currently 1% = 3 higher level kills or 8 same level kills).

Crafting wise it is a dumbed down version of vanguard where you collect things all over the world and use them in your trade skills. You can also do work orders to level up your skills but they tend to get expensive later on. There are no clicking during the trade skill, however there are the failure/success and extra special proccing which gives you a higher grade item with more stats (similar to those in vanguard). The things you make in the game (I'm only up to the second level in 1 skill) is actually quite useful, as I'm using my own hand made staff which has around 10% better damage then the best money can buy for my level.

Skill wise it is also very similar to vanguard where as you level up you can perform more skill chains that give you more dmg or stuns or such. If you're a simple button masher then this game is not for you as there isn't simply 1 skill chain but many from which you can chose from. (once you get there in level)

Because this game is so reliant on grouping (from what I can see) at higher levels, people tend to be much nicer and adhere to the camp rule (at least on my server). From my (already 40 hours of) play (hehe), I have only been attempted Ksed once. Considering the crowded ness of the newbie areas this would have happened much more in lineage. I also experience several occasions where people have 'lined up' for a particular spawn which I have not had the pleasure of seeing since EQ days.

Mob wise, prepare for a very very very Cute game. There are no ugly critters and at one point I started feeling sorry for all the mumu I'm killing. Thats right, there's a whole village of these little furry bear/piggy cross things called Mumus. After farming them for a while (and seeing them fall over after anyone around them dies) I just couldn't do it anymore. Of course this could just be a female thing...

If you're looking for something that’s a little bit more of a challenge then wow. If you're not afraid of the gold spammers and are really quick with your block finger. If you're a maso who don't mind losing exp upon death (even the stupid ones). If you miss the player interaction you use to get in EQ where grouping was a semi must. Then this is the game for you, at least to try out.

I'll probably stay for a couple of month (I'm broke hehe) but so far the game has me back to the old days of EQ where I am planning what I will do in game during work, and I'm loving it!

Also a quick add, there's not that much information on this game, so allakhazam is not going to help you much and the crafting skills trees are hard to find. But that’s part of the fun right?

On a side note, I set aside my ranger for a bit to dabble in the other class which captured my interest.
My Templar is 17, and I hate to say it but I think my ranger might not get much more playtime.
Of course, given that none of my local friends are playing, I might drop it at the end of the month anyway. Just not the same when not playing with friends.

Eh, no thanks. Looks fairly generic, and if I'm going to play a non-WoW MMORPG, it'll be going back to WAR.

I might give SW: TOR a whirl, but I don't want to pay $50 for the honor of doing so. If I get a beta key/friend key, sure.

It was meh. Getting my wings was fun, the graphics were pretty, but it just didn't top wow for actual overall amusement and entertainment.

Really? I'm supprised not more of you guys are into this, seems more than 50% of the player population are ex-EQ players and the atmosphere is fantastic.

Just last night, there was a nostalgic discussion on EQ in the LFG channel (not sure why that channel) and I made a couple of new friends.

Maybe I just enjoyed the social community of EQ more than I though :|

It was more EQ like, but again, it's lacking that visceral "I hit my button and my character immediately does something cool" feel that I get in WoW. The classes had nothing terribly innovative about them. The Ranger was nice, but I'm sort of Ranger starved in WoW (hunters just don't feel right to me).

It was tres pretty. But still added up to Meh for me.

I fear the Lineage comparisons (god that game was a grind-fest; and a boring one at that), and I'm not looking for something to addict me just to be addicted. I shun asian MMO influences as a rule.

While I certainly bemoan the trend towards "soloability" and away from the social group aspects, I've drifted out of a certain comfort zone in which I think jumping in blind and meeting new people would work; I haven't done that well since EQ. Thus, if a handful of people I've gamed with before aren't interested, a group-game is gonna leave me stranded and lost.

I felt that way slightly too monty (I'm currently playing a chanter) until I hit 21 (where you start to get the real skills) and the graphics of my chain hit is awesome. Admittedly you do not kill mobs as fast as wow, but that is also part of the attraction to me for this game. I hit my first boss area (no instances so far) at level 17 and just loved the similarities between aion and EQ (6 people groups, no instancing so you gotta wait for mobs ( fast spawn timer doesn’t make it tedious) and the group dynamic). I would even go further and say that the group environment in such areas requires the players to have above single digit IQ or you're facing an eminent wipe.

Kaffis as far as the lineage comparison goes, this game is nothing even close to it. Completing quests is the fastest way to level (at level 20 per same level mob kill is around 3k exp, per quest is around 30-70k depending on the quest). I also have to admit that up to this point the classes are uncannily balanced compared with all other games I’ve played. (all are able to solo with potions and yet still each have something to offer a group)

I do understand the idea of not having someone to group with and I ran into that problem with I first started wow. I guess I just have to say making friends (with normal coherent human beings) in this game has been amazingly easy compared with wow. I totally wish they had recruit a friend accounts which is what I think this game needs.

So that I feel like I'm actually part of the world, rather than having it handed to me on a silver platter at my convenience.
Part of the attraction from EQ was waiting for the spawn of certain mobs you know dropped your loot. The planning, the rush of mobilizing before your rival guild, the organisation of ports and just generally people coming together and working as a team.
Maybe I'm slightly Maso, but doing the same thing at the same time on the same bat channel just isn't fun to me anymore once the novelty wore off.

Sounds more like a job than a game. I used to hate logging into Everquest to raid, only to find that everything was dead because of the idiotic way they handled raid bosses in that game.

So, having had to go back to last week just to find a strip that references Aion and not quite seeing anything in it that would give one cause to avoid the game like the plague, I read the associated blog entry:

Still not getting a clear picture here. Please set aside your vain attempts to appear mysteriously omniscient and just come right out with an answer to the question put to you, because otherwise I'm going to have to assume you won't play the game because you just can't handle how pretty it is.
