So, I've been exchanging monthly letters with a pen-pal in Germany (formerly East Germany) for a very, very long time. Christmas cards and Birthdays get included in this. In any case, her last letter came with a CD her daughter (9) compiled for me with a little Nena on it.

Very cool I was in Moscow in 1987 and met a girl from Gera in the former GDR; we wrote back and forth for a while but we eventually lost touch. One day I've got to go back over there - my moments without a pair of Intourist guides with me were few and far between. I went to Leningrad, too; it'd be neat to go to St. Petersburg, except I gather I was probably safer dancing at clubs on Nevsky Prospekt then than I would be now...

I love that song, in both languages -- I wish I didn't have to rely on the English version for meaning, though, because you just know that some modifications were made to preserve as much of the cadence as possible. Though I have to admit, I love some of the assonance in the English version; that could just be that I don't recognize similar in the German version since it's all unintelligible to my ear, though. Surfing YouTube, though, I ran across a few interesting new versions.

I have to admit, I like the somewhat different tone the video game elements lend it two decades and one broken wall later.
