Apparently my standard for "snug against the bowl" is much higher than the industry's. I replaced the flushing unit on my toilet over the weekend and overtightened the bolts causing the tank to explode. Oh well, replacing the toilet was easy enough.

Ummm...wow. Really? I didn't know that could even happen.

How the hell? lol

if my toilet exploded I'd want to hire an exorcist or something...

Yeah, porcelain fractures easily. Hand tighten + 1/2 turn usually does the job ... it just needs to not leak.

Wow I'm guessing it has to do with water pressure in the tank and it not being able to drain out? or something?

Ceramic can't be torqued. Not even a little.

First, toilets have no "pressure". They are not sealed and have no need for pressure.

Second, he's replacing the internal components, so I expect the tank was empty.

Third, a vast majority of the tanks in the U.S. are ceramic, as ceramic provides plenty of strength, does not corrode and is easy to clean.

The problem with ceramic though is it is brittle. In this case, he over tightened the nut used to hold the components in place and caused the ceramic to break, and when it happens it is usually catastrophic, aka it did not explode, it simply broke into a number of pieces.

Explode: To break into a number of pieces.
Web definition: To shatter with a loud noise: The vase exploded into tiny pieces when it hit the floor.

No it was full of water, there was a leak after reinstalling the tank so I retightened to try to set the gasket. Hence the more forceful than anticipated breaking into a number of pieces. In hindsight I think I had the wrong gasket.

Ya know, not remembering this was an old thread or the topic, all I could think of was that someone just had a really epic night of partying ...

Along those lines, the new toilet rocks. It is dead silent and I think I could flush my dog down it with little effort.

Any adult dog that can fit into a toilet should be, preferably still in their purse.
