Easily is my pick of GotY out of what's come out so far, but I loved the first two as well.

And pretty much for the same reason that Uncharted 2 nailed it last year. It was just one of those games that I have a zillion different save files now so I can relive certain moments; it was the game that had me babbling to brothers/friends/co-workers about different events, or dragging them over to show them off (Sony should be paying me commission at this point with the number of games/systems I've sold from showing stuff off, but I digress lol).

And to have a battle with a 1600 foot titan, in which you're smaller than his fingernail, and to have it playing that smoothly, with cutscene quality graphics on that scale with that much happening...it's just....wow, how the hell did they pull that off?

The curse of early year GOTY contenders is that they are usually at a disadvantage to later year contenders. Video game tech/development changes within a year at this point. Saw the same thing happen with Killzone 2 vs Uncharted 2. KZ2 was top dog (on the PS3 at least) until UC2 knocked it down and ultimately took the crown.

I think GoW 3 will definitely be nominated, but we'll see what later this year yields.

Yep, of course...I figured that was a given. =) Was just commenting that IMO it's the one to beat thus far. (As Mass Effect 2 was the one to beat before that IMO).

Still many months to go.

I'm still pulling for Mass Effect 2.

Still haven't gotten a chance to play ME2 yet. End of this month I will, tho.

But I agree that ME2 will probably be the heavy-weight on MS's side.

I'm sure glad I rented this instead of buying. I'm only an hour into it and I'm one of the many who are plagued by freezing issues. To be specific, it's stuck loading. I reboot and it does it at the same spot, even if I go back to an old save and play through. It always gets stuck loading once I reach this certain point.

Bummer. :-/

That sucks, Roophus. I hear some are having some freezing issues. I don't think it's that widespread, but I have read of a few posts on GAF of people experiencing the same thing.

Coren:

Have you finished the game yet? When you do (if you haven't already) take a look below at my interpretation of the ending and tell me if it jives with how you understood it:
(MAJOR END GAME SPOILERS AHOY!)
Spoiler:
Basically, Athena reveals to Kratos that Zeus created Pandora's box to store all of the negative energy generated from the Titan/Olympian war to prevent a future cataclysm. Unbeknown to Zeus, Athena injected the box with a positive energy to counter-balance the bad, should it ever be opened (the good/bad power of the box actually jives with real world Greek mythology). She then had Hephaestus create Pandora, a "lock" in the embodiment of a girl to keep her secret power of the box from escaping.

When Kratos opened the box in GoW1, only a fraction of the box's power went into Kratos to help him kill Ares. However, at the same time, he ended up releasing the negative aspect of the box in the form of a plague of fear that infected the land, including Zeus. Upon seeing Kratos killing a god, Zeus grew paranoid, and embarked on a quest to destroy him.

Meanwhile, the agenda of the Titans is put into motion, when Gaia realizes that Kratos actually has a chance to kill Zeus, thus creating a power vacuum that the Titans can once again fill, and reign over the Earth. Gaia eventually reveals this to Kratos, but is killed along with most of the other Titans.

In GoW3, Pandora ends up "unlocking" the hidden positive power of the box and (I presume) transferring the power to Kratos while he is knocked unconscious after a battle with Zeus.

Kratos and Zeus duke it out again, and Kratos kills Zeus' physical form, releasing his ethereal form, which crushes Kratos to near-death. Kratos goes on an inner journey (which was exceptionally done in the game, I might add) and learns that he can only ultimately succeed when he forgives himself for what he has done to his family. He does so, and Pandora's spirit/essence/whatever leads him to the box's true positive power, which she says is Hope (which is what all people fight for when all else is lost).

Kratos snaps back into the real world with these new powers and proceeds to pwn Zeus, finally killing him.

With the power still within him, Athena indirectly reveals that she too has an agenda that seeks to fill the power vacuum left by Zeus as the soul god, and insists that Kratos give the power within him to her. After satisfying his revenge, making peace with himself, and seeing that Athena taking power will once again subject Mankind to rule under one imperfect force, Kratos drives the Blade of Olympus threw his own chest, releasing Hope to the world. Ironically, the ego/revenge-driven killing machine who normally did not care for anyone else, did the noble thing (which I thought was a nice touch). Athena departs in disappointment, still in her ethereal form and vanishes.

After the credits roll, there is a short scene that shows the spot where Kratos was lying, now vacant, with a trail of blood leading over a cliff. Interestingly, Kratos fell on top of a visage of a phoenix, implying that he was given new life. So the gamer is left to decide whether Kratos was reborn only to throw himself off of the cliff to his final death, or if he climbed down from Mount Olympus to live on.

The only lingering question I have is (along with what I THINK is the answer):

Spoiler:
How could Athena not know what she put into the box? She seems to think that it is an ultimate power weapon that she can use to rule Humanity in her own image. I honestly don't think she would have been an evil goddess, but she still would have been a singular ruler over Humanity, thus denying it of free will (which is why Kratos lied to her about nothing being in the box)

But I digress . . .

The only thing I can think of is that the positive counter-balancing powers she put in the box were adaptive, in the sense that, the powers' attributes changed depending on who absorbed them. So for Athena, they may be ultimate power to rule as a goddess, while for Kratos it was Hope for Humanity, and if, say, Hercules opened it, the powers would be something entirely different for him.

What do you think?

Spoiler:
In a nutshell, my impression is that Kratos did in fact empty out the box the first time, just noone realized it yet, and that hope was within Kratos all along, just buried beneath layers of anger, rage, fear, and doubt.

And it took his moment of "self redemption" helped along by Pandora to bring it out.

Ah ok, that makes sense, given what happens.

Spoiler:
Pandora was still the key after all, she just unlocked the power from within Kratos (who had become the new vessel for the trapped power) instead of the physical box.

What is your interpretation of what I put in the second spoiler tag?

From the first hour of this game, I thought it was going to be my favorite game of the year. I don't even dare rent/buy this game again because I'm sure it'll freeze on me at the same point continually. I guess I just don't get to play it. My level of disappointment is so great that I can't even focus on play any other game right now. I keep thinking how awesome that start to GoW3 was.

*update*

WOOT! Somehow, it managed to load and I'm beyond the area I kept having troubles with. I hope that's the last of my freezing issues I encounter. Considering I have to leave for work in an hour, I'm actually pretty excited. Now I get to play more in 9 hours!

Roophus,

Do you have the option for trading this copy for another? I have a feeling that if it is freezing on one spot, it may very well do that on others. Sounds like you may have gotten a lemon.

^^^ Just saw that on their site. I'm sure there are some that will write tersely-worded letters to them.

I could not even imagine the **** storm that would ensue if they have Kratos taking down Jesus.

(Of course, let's be real -- that game ain't even gonna happen.)

Got my 5.1 surround system today and decided I'd get a new game to go with it... Traded in all of my Wii games (11) for $130 and picked this up.

The intro was very beautiful. Especially when I destroyed Poseidon.
