This should probably go in rants, but certain things baffle me to no end.

1. Why is it cheaper to buy a complete Remington 700 ADL than it is to buy just the action?

2. Why is it that said rifle is $167 cheaper today than it was six months ago?

The ADL is no longer in production, so the cost reduction is likely to help move the product off the shelves in favor of the 700 BDL model that replaced it.

People have settled down from the "OMG OBAMA's GONNA STEAL TEH GUNS!" post-election hysteria.

Timmit:

I'm just baffled really. I still wish I could buy just the action cheaper than a completely rifle of which I'm going to discard everything else.

Most likely they don't make very many extra actions. Most people don't want to buy anything other than a complete gun.

Spare parts aren't common for guns? That just doesn't seem right.

Is the BDL that much of an improvement? Never having owned a rifle, I've been thinking of trying target shooting. I would like to get the groupings I used to get with rented guns at a range closer to the bullseye.

Should I stick with a handgun? Or would shooting with a rifle (and I would need to find a rifle range) develop the skills?

Diamondeye:

I get that; I really do. I'm probably just a bit annoyed at it all, too. I should probably demand less quality from my rifles.

I think you might accept less quality, but please don't demand less quality.

Yes, I know you can be very demanding.

From the little bit of reading I did, the BDL is claimed to have a better slide operation on the bolt, and it has a drop plate. Personally, the drop plate, with all else being equal, would be the decider in picking which gun to purchase. I strongly dislike having to cycle shells through the action to empty the magazine.

That said, if Khross is looking to make a single shot, bolt action rifle, that isn't really a concern, and could be a liability to fitting into the stock he has chosen.

Single shot it is. Don't want a drop plate, but that would not really be much of an issue on the finished product, since the stock will be a hand-cut one off as it is. But, heh, it's a present for someone; so, I shouldn't really grumble too much.

I need to get around to picking up a good precision rifle. My M1A is accurate enough for anything that you'd ever really need a .308 rifle for, but I really want a .338 lapua bolt action for funsies.

Firing a handgun and a rifle are two different skills. The stance and posture is different, as is the aiming method. A rifle is much easier to fire accurately as it's a more accurate weapon to begin with, and the longer barrel makes it easier to aim.

What Coro said.

Though if you get trigger control down on a hand gun, you'll have it right on rifle.

Maybe you could sell the extra parts you d at hugely marked up prices to make up for the difference in price between the gun and the action? :p

No one wants a factory made barrel, stock, or cheap scope :P

So true, rarely does the trigger group even survive without modification.

Butting in here. Went looking for a .338 a few weeks ago and almost bought this:
http://www.stoegerindustries.com/firearms/stoeger_coach_guns.php
What a fun gun. I may still buy it. Not sure yet. I'd like to try some Cowboy action stuff. He also had a modified Ruger Blackhawk that was really nice. The .338 though, might be waayyy too much gun for around PA. I don't think I could even use it here in NJ. On the price issue, the older models were getting blown out at some very reasonable prices. Especially shotguns and AR-15's. This is my first foray into purchasing firearms and deciding what to get is confusing the heck outta me. I'm also thinking about getting a 45. Decisions, decisions.

The one I've wanted off and on since i was a kid was the modified 1892 Winchester Rifle used by Chuck Connors in the Rifleman, bottom of the picture.

If you're in the market for a 1911 .45 you can't go wrong with a Kimber. Worth every penny.
