You should feel bad for all hourly employees. This bill is going to lead to massive underemployment as businesses large and small cut hours down to stay under the 25 hour requirement.

Heh, my employer just announced they were ceasing group coverage for all active employees at the beginning of next fiscal year. That's 12,500 people.

Eh, the bill is doing what it's designed to do: force everyone into the government option. Does this really surprise anyone? I know I'm not surprised.

I don't think there is one for at least 4 years.

I don't think there is one in general. I think this basically forces us all to go buy Kaiser.

Why are they doing that if there is no government option until 4 years from now? That makes no sense.

Because the fine is cheaper than providing health care.

There's no government option (conservative Dems blocked it), but there are significant income-based subsidies for people to buy individual private plans.

This health care bill has nothing to do with providing a government option, unless you are using that phrase in lieu of the planned insurance pools...

The insurance pools are intended to be groups of private companies offering health plans to individuals by organized as a collective bargaining unit, based upon the minimum levels required by the Bill. Different pools should have different levels of care, with increased cost, and will probably still be subjected to the individual state requirements for insurance. So each state will probably have a series of pools for their citizens.

The government option is what is also known as the single payer system, which is basically putting everyone on Medicare as a primary insurance, with any private insurance plans that might remain relegated to elective functions, or to fill in what will likely be monstrous gaps in the "public" coverage.

A lot of people consider this current Bill to be nothing but a set up to pushing the real liberal goal of a single payer plan at a later date.

Try here, but you probably have read more of the bill than this guy in voting yes.

That's my congressman, but what am I supposed to do with the link to contact him? I've contacted that guy before...he doesn't reply.
I have tried googling this stuff and reading about it on here but I either wind up with something that is too confusing to understand or something that is so clouded with political debate that I can't get to the reality.
Is there anywhere that sums it up, without bias, in a couple of pages EXACTLY what was passed and how it will affect everyone?

Not really, because noone seems to really know what the bill has passed. Not even the people that passed it.

It's a 1200 page bill that like 20 people on the planet have read in its entirety. So, no. That's a third of the problem, nobody really knows what the hell we just passed. Another third is that it's so massive and bloated, the Healthcare Reform Bill for Dummies is 400 pages long, too, if not longer. And the final third is that no matter how many people read it, understand it, or summarize it, it's still a steaming pile.

I still maintain it is like any other law and the letter doesn't mean ****. What's going to matter is how it is "interpreted" and then implemented. The joy of bureacracy.

Every bill is long and complicated. It's just the reality of legal writing. For example, I recently drafted a simple amendment to a contract that literally does nothing but extend the deadline for completing the project by a few months. The amendment is 7 pages long, and the only substantive line in the whole damn thing is, "The Completion Date shall be August 31, 2010." Everything else is referencing definitions, renewing representations and warranties, boilerplate about governing law and submission to jurisdiction, etc. And believe me, it's not just "make-work" b.s. This is all stuff that can and does come up in lawsuits. So, 7 pages for a single substantive change. Now imagine redesigning the entire health insurance industry - 1200 pages isn't that bad.

For quick reference, though, you could try these: Implementation Timeline and Immediate Provisions.

Serious question: When are you going to admit that this bill accomplish none of the "substantive and meaningful" promises Obama has made regarding the bill?

I suspect it'll take a couple of years for things to play out and enough evidence to come in for me to reach a meaningful conclusion. My prediction, though, is that it will accomplish less and cost more than promised, but it will still be a significant improvement over the status quo.

Apparently I underestimate the depths of your Obama fanboyism.

According to polls, 89 percent of Americans were satisfied with their own personal medical care prior to the passage of this bill.

Do you honestly think that health care that will accomplish less and cost more than promised is a significant improvement, given that fact?

Link? I am highly skeptical of that claim.
