I read a lot about black people claiming that black people are getting beat up by cops for no reason, their children treated unfairly in school, being denied loans or jobs because they aren't white, etc. I'm also reading a lot of white people saying that black people are lazy, are handed things just because of their race instead of having to earn them, and pull the race card in inappropriate situations just to get out of trouble.

Not to be flip, but I think you answered your own question there.

Racism is completely overblown, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Hell, even having lived in the south for a while, the only people I knew there that were racist were older; we're talking 50+.

For the most part, I find that racism comes from people other than whites, whites are only accused of it more.

Of course, I may be wearing blinders here a little, as I live in one of the least racially diverse areas in the country (that's a guess, but it's probably not too far from the truth). I don't know a single person that is racist, but the fact that there aren't all that many non-whites around here may be the cause of that.

The most racist person I can think of off the top of my head isn't even white; he's black. That honor would go to Al Sharpton, who propagates the race issue, and is part of the problem.

So yes, it absolutely still exists, and in some areas is very present and persistant. In other areas, it's much less pronounced or almost non-existant.
I'm willing to bet that everything you think is racism is actually socio-economic classism. Indeed, I'm willing to bet that the places you think it's "less pronounced or almost non-existant" are among the least diverse economically in the country.

I'd take that bet. While "Socio-economic classism" may be more prevalent than racism, real racism exists--however it mostly exists in minority communities directed against the majority.

Khross, you're assuming when I say "places" that I mean entire cities or regions. I don't. Sometimes it's small pocket neighborhoods or families.

Interesting dodge. You're asserting that you can somehow make an a broad generalization without aggregate data to substantiate your claim. Oh, wait, that's just another opinion you can't validate.

That's because you tend to ignore any evidence contrary to your preconceived opinion on a matter. To answer my question, Boulder County, Colorado is generally regarded as the Mecca of ethnographic and demographic tolerance in the United States. It is, indeed, a veritable cornucopia of liberal ideals at play; at least with regard to various social constructs and social agendas. There is no end to the number of comparative sociological studies that use Boulder County as a model for liberal ideology on social and political practices. It, indeed, generally surpasses any location in California, Seattle, Oregon, and Massachusetts with regards to "equality" and "tolerance", such as low minority targeted violence; generally low violent crime; very few discrimination cases, etc.

Do you know what's curious about Boulder County?

It's mostly socio-economic at this point. Honestly the whole "race as issue" thing would probably be gone in two or three generations if our government would stop institutionalizing it, and our politicians stopped weaponizing it.

OK, I now know more about the political, economic and social makeup of Boulder County than I ever wanted to know... and nothing really stands out. It's mostly white, less minorities than tons of places, has 2% less gay males and 79% more gay females than the national norm...

whoever norm is.

It looks younger, by a considerable amount, than other places. Median age 33, 22.90% under the age of 18, 13.40% from 18 to 24, 33.60% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 7.80% who were 65 years of age or older.

It has a notably-higher-than-average family income, with a very low standard deviation.

Of course this is meaningless due to cost of living calculations, but the percentage of children living in "poverty" in Boulder County is about half the national average.

Oh, come on guys, you're not looking hard enough! Incidentally, Boulder County is confirmation bias in action. It's rather spectacular.

The median income for a household in the county is $55,861, and the median income for a family is $70,572. Males have a median income of $48,047 versus $32,207 for females. The per capita income for the county is $28,976. 9.50% of the population and 4.60% of families are below the poverty line. Can you please just lay it out? I'm not at all sure where you're going with this.

I'm with khross on this, it tends to be more socio-economic classism than racism.

I can't speak for any other race, however asians have come a long way since the first rail roads. As the average social class of asians grew, the average racism towards them diminished...

Of course there is always the war generation who will always be racist not because they are bad people, but because of the things they saw when they grew up. Perfect example would be the great grand father of an ex, who use to mumble under his breath and call me a chink when ever we visited... After much care and attention, and the gift of a uniformed kitty (his wife collects cat stuff) he still called me a chink but with much affection attached.

socio-economic classism is much harder to over come than racism however >.< I'd bet most people would not bat an eyelash at inviting a successful professor of any race into your house for food, but would think twice if it was the delinquent child criminal, who have gone through lots of rehabilitation and refuses to get a job (of any race).

I dunno Lyd, it seems pretty straightforward to me: Get a job amd work it every day until you've saved some money...

Oh, there are quite a few professors at Berkeley who I'd choose the delinquent over any day. ;)
