Dammit, accidentally ran a red light over the weekend. It had a camera.

Had stopped for a light approaching the roundabout that circles City Hall in Philly. It turned green, I went to go round, and noticed an instant too late that there was a second light just past it. I had completely overlooked it due to the screwy traffic patterns, all of the traffic, and OMG CITY HALL!! looming directly in front of me. With that huge thing right behind the lights, they were really hard to notice.

*sigh* My expensive weekend in Philly with the girl child got more expensive, I guess.

The next day, I saw someone make the same mistake. The camera went off as soon as you hit the line, so if you even nosed over it a tiny bit, you were hosed.

Traffic circles shouldn't have stop lights at their entrances/exits. The next cross-street down? Fine. But having them at the point where the feeding streets join the circle is retarded. Only moderately less so than giving cars entering the circle the right of way.

My town is retarded, too. Fortunately, they became less retarded (as they used to be an offender on both counts, and then wised up and changed the right of way bit since I moved here; let me tell you, that caused a lot of confusion for long-time residents for quite a while) a while back, and in their defense (I suppose, if pressed to defend them), the lights serve primarily as a vehicle to support the crosswalk lights.

My experience with a red light camera was fun. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how/when it happened. I'm pretty alert as a driver and very rarely even hit the intersection on a yellow light, but sure enough the camera doesn't lie, it was my SUV with my tags. My wife still pokes fun at my about it now and then (except that I never told her that I double checked and sure enough I was raiding that night, and it was HER that did it). I suppose some things we can take with us to the grave. =)

They do make sprays that you can apply to your license plate that causes a glare when the camera tries to take a picture. The coating is invisible to the naked eye.

These were debunked by Mythbusters.

Yes, but these tactics were not.

'Easter Bunny' targets photo radar camera in Tempe AZ
Quote:
TEMPE, AZ -- The Easter bunny put in a lot of hard work here in the Valley over the past 24 hours.
In addition to his usual duties, he targeted photo radar cameras in Tempe.
The person behind the bunny costume managed to shut one of the cameras down for hours.
"I think it's funny, the cameras are annoying," said John Leonard of Tempe.
Jay Shelton of Bonner Springs, Kansas videotaped the prank and then uploaded it to YouTube.
"I heard there was going to be an Easter Bunny there so I figured I'd tape him," said Shelton.

Really? Not that this means it's true, but I saw a story on them on either 20/20 or some other program. They said how those sprays or stickers are illegal in many states. I can't believe they'd make snake oil illegal.
