I've said it before, and I'll say it again, letting large companies fail is only good in the long term, and since "long term" isn't compatible with "I need to be re-elected in a year" it will never fly.

Large companies used to fail all the time right up until, oh, I don't know... 16 months ago, and most of the citizens who fall into the "likely voter" category hated the idea of government intervention. That's why you've seen such a sharp rise in vocal conservatism, and that's why Scott Brown won a senatorial election in Massachusetts of all places The only people who advocate what you are talking about are liberal Democrats, and there aren't as many of them as you seem to think. D- for political analysis.
