JFC, I take a day off and sleep in and I come back to 5 more pages of asshattery.

My name has been thrown around a lot in the past couple days. Some indifferent, most negative and I don't think I saw anything positive.

I'm sorry, I'm not infallible like Bery. I'm sorry I did some things without legitimate reports, but we all knew where the threads were going. Sometimes I feel you can't follow the rules 100%, because someone is always going to sidestep or find a loophole or push a boundary. Was I really wrong for locking the original thread? You could smell the **** a mile away, everyone knew what was going on. But because I took action without someone clicking a report button, some here would see me crucified.

I understand that I can't keep everyone, or maybe even not a majority of you happy. I just try to do my part and correct little things when I see them. It's quite the vicious cycle, saying that reports don't mean **** so we wont report, then accusing mods of not doing a job because there haven't been any reports, then getting pissed when actions are taken sans report --> repeat.

It's kind of depressing being **** on so vigorously by some, when I commune with you all more than I do my own friends IRL.

Seems to me you're doing what you can to live up to the obligations that go along with the job as you see it.

Folks might argue but they can't ask for better.

I don't know how this mess is a surprise to anyone. Making fun of christianity on this forum has always been given a free pass. One of the worst offenders used to get all worked up if you made a comment about islam, but would laugh along with the christianity haters.

Every single thread about christianity will get one of four or five different people that have some issue come in and attempt to ruin it or give some off color joke. None of them has ever been punished or reprimanded for this in my knowledge, and I don't see that ever changing. At this point I just read the threads and when I get to a post by one of the people mentioned I will just roll my eyes and blow past it.

All everyone is doing at this point is playing into their game. Choose not to be offended. Don't give them what they're looking for.

I feel that the Christians of this board are demanding that we treat their religion with respect out of proportion to the relevance of the post, and trying to shove this down our throats because the outnumber us (Yeah, they do. There are more devout Christians here than there are anti-christian folks. The largest group, of course, is the apathetic) . Is any non-Christian asking Taly to step down? Are any non-Christians suggesting that what she did was anything more that asshattery? Not as far as I can see. This seems to me to be a case of "We don't like what you say or how you say it. We only want people who agree that our sacred cow should be protected in charge around here, and there are enough of us to push it through". This is a very real force in politics lately, and it scares the noodles out of me.

Please note that I'm not asking anyone to protect MY religion or opinions. I'm not suggesting that YOUR mythology is any less real and relevant than mine (the Bery in the back of my head it shouting "Yeah, but mine is REAL!"), what I'm suggesting that what seems playful to a critic is blasphemy to a believer and cause for burning at the stake for a fanatic.

If you want to start a spin-off forum for yay-Jesus circle-jerks, go right ahead. Or ask for a special forum here where dissent won't be permitted. On this forum, in General, you get what you get. Sometimes that's jerks making fun of what you hold dear. As several of us have been told (by some of the people currently demanding protection): "If you don't want to hear it, don't post". Your savior didn't die on the cross so you can complain about how hard YOU have it.

Taamar, it's my view that what Talya is describing is textbook trolling. If you want to call it asshattery ok, agreed. I would feel the same if this were any group posting a similar thread. So if a Jewish poster posted a Hanukkah thread or a Wicca (wiccan?) posted a happy whatever holiday thread and people trashed it, that's similarly not cool.

It's not about just Christianity or even any religion. It's about being nice to people and being civil. It's equally inappropriate to enter a thread celebrating X and making fun of it, whether X is Easter, Hanukkah, someone's birthday, the release of a new game, the announcement of some new technology, someone having a good day at work, or whatever. It takes a lot less effort to ignore a thread that you know you don't care about than to not only click on the thread and read it but also click Reply and type in some off color remark making fun of the people who happen to enjoy X.

It's one thing to go in guns blazing into a debate thread. It's another thing entirely to enter a generally positive thread having fun with a topic and drag it down. That's the main reason why I banned Beryllin. Not because he was being an asshat in Hellfire, but because he was spreading **** from Hellfire into General.
