honestly:

I recommend discarding the pork with extreme prejudice. Better to be safe than sorry. The only meat that I personally can abide leaving on a counter all night is Jerky. (not something left out so long it resembles jerky)

As for the cheese... I can offer no comment; as I like blue cheese

I've often wondered why food has a 'Best When Used By' date, but not a "Will Kill You After" date.

I mean what exactly do they mean by 'Best' ?

Hmm.. it may stay safe for a few days in the fridge, but most food is no longer tasty the second you put it in a container and throw it in the fridge. There's a few exceptions, but not many.

Some can be resurrected to some semblance of tastiness if you heat them up on the stove or in the oven instead of the microwave though.

Throw it all out. Yeah, food costs money, but missing a day or three of work because you're 'leaking' is really expensive. The biggest worry with deli stuff left out has nothing to do with what the item is and everything to do with the sanitation of the environment in which it was cut. Remember the deli clerk who cut it? Any bacteria on his hands has now had a little day-spa of growth. Was the slicer sanitized immediately before your order? You've got a few hours bacterial buildup there, too. Any flies that might have landed on your food had poo on their feet, and that's had time to ripen, too...

It's not likely to kill you. It may not even make you sick (you can play russian roulette with a six shooter and survive it 5 times. That doesn't make it a safe game)... but is it worth the chance to save a few bucks on deli meat that doesn't taste as good anymore?

Now, I'm curious if Screeling meant real "deli" meat, or just a package of lunchmeat. I was kinda going with just a package of lunchmeat from the grocery store, really.
