This has come up in the office just now as my loving wife packed one for my lunch.

Discuss. The pickle veggi or fruit thing, not what my loving wife packs for my lunch.

Cucumbers are fruits.

Therefore, pickles are fruits.

Having an enclosed seed and developing from a flower, botanically speaking, cucumbers are classified as fruits. However, much like tomatoes and squash they are usually perceived, prepared and eaten as vegetables.[1] (Wikipedia)

So, whichever floats your boat. I perceive them as vegetables, even though they are technically fruit.

Or, one might say, "tickles your pickle."

Technically, vegetables are a 'grocery store' type definition, nothing truly botanical.

Most vegetables can be classified as either fruit, leaves, stems, or roots :-D

Staying in theme...eating said pickle after eating a slice of watermelon...gotta say, not the best decision I've made today.

As both are from the melon family, I would have to classify them both as fruits.

This seems to be the reason that Oonagh cares for neither watermelon nor cucumber. Pickle that cuke, though and all bets are off. Loves 'em.

A fruit is just a sub-type of vegetables, so it's not "wrong" to call a tomato or cucumber a vegetable any more that it's wrong to call a square a rhombus.

Right, since vegetable literally means nothing more specific than 'edible plant material'.

Hence why almonds are vegetables :-D

Honestly, the word is completely arbitrary and dependent on context.

There is no right or wrong answer to, say, "Are mushrooms vegetables?".

And under common parlance, fruits are not a subtype of vegetables, as "some vegetables are fruit, but not all fruits are vegetables" :-D

Actually, mushrooms are a fungus, not a vegetable (plant). Different kind of thing all together.

Hence why I say 'vegetable' is an undefined word. You can find plenty of backing for mushrooms as vegetables, since the word is only defined in a culinary sense.

People always try to relate it to biology in some way, and there really is no tie in.

I've used that a few times myself, after "Ketchupgate".
