I played this when it first came out. Had lots of lag, problems with interface etc so I stopped. Started to play again this week and am having a lot of fun with it.

Anyone else playing?

I tried it when it first came out. Hated it. Tried it again last October. Still hated it.

I played for a bit until it stopped working for some reason. I've tried everything, no dice. So I said to hell with it.

I hate the setting, but like the mechanics (at least of melee based classes). I'm sure I'll reinstall it at some point. It is free after all.

I still have an account, and I log in every once in a while. Like Lonedar, I really enjoy the mechanics. I just don't have as much time as I used to. But it is a nice little getaway every now and then. And it's free. So that's always a plus.

My little brother has developed an interest in it, and has tried to drag me and his friends in. There is a non-trivial amount of resistance.

Is it really totally free? Game and all?

You can play for free. There are some perks (certain classes and races, for example) which you need to buy if you want to take advantage of them, and there are adventure packs that you must buy if you want those particular areas/quests. But you can play the basic game for free if you're satisfied with that.

You don't need to pay to get the software, and you don't need to pay any subscription fee.

edit: I played DDO for about 2-3 weeks, got my brother hooked on it, then stopped playing.

I'm still playing. I have characters on both Thelanis and Orien.

If you play nothing but free (f2p in DDO chat lingo) adventures, you can level to about level 12ish before running out of xp. You will not have access to the Warforged or Drow races, or the Monk or Favored Soul classes. You can unlock access for free to Drow by earning 400 Favor (easily doable by level 8 to 10).

Website

Might check it out.

For a short bit I had tried Runes of Magic, which was also free (with buyable stuff).....but lost interest soon after the huge download :(

Been thinking about going back and giving LOTRO another try, but I knew noone that played and got lonely, even though the game was spectacular imho. WoW has been getting stale often for me......and all I find myself doing these days is logging in a couple times a week and leveling another alt.

Yah, the DDO Free to play, (F2P) is nice, but its not the entire game. There are 'adventure packs' that are only available to VIP (paying customers). If you dont mind leveling up a bunch of characters and grinding favor (faction) you get DDO points that are usable in the store, I think its 25 every 50 points of favor? Then 50 I beleive when you reach the jumps, like 400 in coin lords, 400 in house D. So it is possible to unlock the entire game if you dont mind farming and doing the same quests like 300 times without spending a dime.

Also, Free 2 play, after level 4 or 5 you need leveling sigil's to level up, they only drop for free 2 play players, as I never once got one. They can also be bought in the DDO store.

Drow can be unlocked via Favor, Warforged, 32 point buy, reincarnation, Monk's, Favored souls, I beleive they can still be unlocked via favor as least use to be able to, they can all be bought for $$ in the DDO store as well, same with healing potions, exp potions, dungeon packs, dungeon passes, hirelings, weapons (nothing great, dont waste any money on that crap). The have specials every few days 25% off certain items.

VIP's get 500 DDO points a month with there subscription to spend in the store as well as unlocking all the adventure packs.

As a F2P you have gold limits how much gold you can have on characters depending on your level, after level 4 you need Leveling sigil's to level up as well. I dont remeber off hand how much is it, so if you have friends better to have them buy ya stuff and pass it on, as stuff in the AH can be ridicolousy expensive.

Hirelings have been added it, so soloing is alot more plausible than before. You can hire any class as an NPC besides a rogue, you still have to find and disable traps yourself or another player, NPC's wont find/disable traps.

Updates are coming out a helluva lot quicker, more since Free 2 play went live, than since the game has been out.

I havent played in a few months, since last 2 updates I beleive and went to Free 2 play. Also if you have a friend that is VIP, they can purchase passes for the non free dungeons like 2 hours to take you on as well for fairly cheap since they get the free points every month, such as delera's tomb.

Its got a very different combat system than most MMO's, and having traps and stuff is kinda cool, but IMHO after like 10-12th level, random PUG's can be a pain in the ***, cause of the way you can build your characters and can be a pain in the butt sometimes to find a group, especially with the seperation of Free 2 play and VIP having access to different dungeons.

They also added in Epic Dungeon's as well as solo difficutly to alot of dungeons, Level cap upped to 20

They removed the whole leveling sigil mechanic a couple patches ago.

And a good way to remove the gold cap (as well as the Auction House item limit and to gain 2 more character slots) is to make one purchase of Turbine store points (that is buying the points themselves, not spending of points). This turns your f2p into "premium" f2p.

I agree on the post 12 PUG comment. I think part of the problem is that most dungeons at that point are significant time investments and it's frustrating to get halfway through a dungeon and have people rage quit because its too hard. That has the potential to screw the remaining members because of the whole "xp only upon completion" mechanic. This is where guild grouping becomes especially attractive.

If I could ignore the setting and everything related to the setting, it was playable...until level 11 or so when I ran out of stuff to do. But the setting made it really difficult to enjoy playing.

thanks Raber, going to have to give that a try, already have a few AH purchases from the DDO points. Glad to hear they got rid of the Sigil's, major PITA.
