...who do you have in mind? Doesn't seem to be too many.
I'm thinking cool, hip, funny, and in the public eye.

Susan Sarandon? Candace Bergen? Betty White?
Definitely Goldie Hawn.

Cool, hip and funny aren't the only qualities you look for in role models. My list of women over 60 younger women could look to emulate, at least in some ways, would include

Barbara Walters
Stockard Channing
Sigourney Weaver
Diane Sawyer
Martha Stewart
Tina Turner
Meryl Streep
Raquel Welch

There are plenty of them out there if you look.

For some reason I can't stand Sigourney Weaver...but all the others are cool.

It's odd, but I would totally do her. I swear, there's just something about her that really...damn. I'm gonna need a minute.

It's because when she sleeps above her covers, she sleeps four feet above her covers.

I thought it was due to her ability to rescue small children from alien queens just before a nuclear explosion.

I'm gonna be honest, it was this. I had a huge crush on her when I was a small child and it has persisted throughout my life.

You watched Aliens as a small child?

Can actors and actresses really be considered role models?

Raltar ~ 1984

It is quite possible that Raltar watched it as a small child and developed a crush on the heroine of the movie.

1983, actually. But yeah, I watched all kinds of movies like that when I was growing up.

Well, like it or not, they kind of are...this generation of kids gets soooo much of their information from television and the internet...so much more from public figures than literary or any other types...so that's why I'm asking the question.

Why actresses? Let's encourage girls to be something else. More nerd girls ftw.

Madam Curie! Women with radiation are hot. Literally.

Yeah, actresses are actually the least likely to get my vote for role models.

Amelia Earhart (just don't tell them to get lost)
Sarah Bernhardt (think you're the drama queen? You've got nothing on her)
Alice B. Toklas (brownie anyone?)
Betty Crocker (while we're talking about baking anyway, why not a fictional role model)
Julia Child (now there was a real cook)
Fay Wray (the first Scream Queen :-) but she was known to monkey around)
Clara Barton (not much funny to say about her, civil war nurse, founder of the American Red cross, she just comes to mind as a real inspirational figure/role model.)

Of course, its hard to put these ladies forth as role models for girls today, none of them are alive.

Ok I get your point, but let's keep it current please. Living women who are still active...

I'm good with Barbara Bush for her development of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.

I might add Laura Bush to that list for the same reason.

Then there's Hillary Clinton, who is a great example for young women, along with Condoleezza Rice...

I believe Barbara Walters was mentioned... Connie Chung, Christiane Amanpour and Katie Couric on the media end of things...

A pure business career role model could be Carly Fiorina, Mary Kay Ash and Meg Whitman...

Maya Angelou for the Arts (although I'm sure there are more, my knowledge is limited)...

For math and the sciences, I'm afraid, I can't come up with any off the top of my head. I'm sure that's my shortcoming and not indicative of the contribution by women in those fields.

Glenn Close, Meryl Streep

Audrey Hepburn (she is dead, but is still a recognizable name)

I thought about this, actresses and actors can be seen as role models for the traits they have that allow them to be successful in their careers.

Thats a great list Taskiss. I can't think of anyone off the top of my head for math and sciences either, except maybe the chick from Mythbusters. She is pretty cool and super smart.

*EDIT: and she is soooo not even close to 60, hahaha. *doh!* My brain got fried in the sun today I think. So, nope, I got no one for the math and science.
