....that is so awesome? It's the cure for whatever ails you.
I had leftover eggrolls for breakfast.

Yum!

Seriously, there is something magical about Chinese food.

Fat and salt. Yummy but deadly.

Awww. And here I thought it was good for me because of all the veggies! And I've NEVER seen a fat Chinese person. Just sayin.

It's because of all the Kung-fu they do. Keeps them in shape.

Most don't eat like that all the time, and portion control has a LOT to do with it. Traditional Chinese cooking is very veggie and starch heavy; the delicious stuff we get here is adjusted to the American perception that meat is the only food that matters and everything else is just filler. To approximate a typical Chinese meal imagine 1 cup of white rice, 1 cup of steamed vegetables, and 1/3 cup of whatever 'entree' you like best.

ALL of it?

That's... rather far-reaching. Like deciding that pizza and roast beef and creme brulee can all be lumped into a single category of 'European foods'.

Well, I've had many friends that have tried to get me to like it. 98% of what I tried tastes horrible and the remaining 2% isn't enough to make a semi-balanced meal. I've had several instances of trying to learn to like it. Even when I can get past the smell, the taste is just bad. I've tried foods various regions and it hasn't changed my opinion. So yeah, pretty much all of it.

Man, it's the one cuisine that I would probably choose if stranded on a desert island. Of course, I'm including Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese in there, too, along with (five different regional types of) Chinese. Except for Filipino food - I like the tastes and all, but why can't they cut their chicken nicely, instead of just hacking it apart with a ****' cleaver, so that you always get bone chips? This ain't EQ.

Given that I don't like Filipino food, but like all the other Asian foods, maybe it's the one you'd like?

Anyway, could be the MSG, LK. Might wanna look into that, you seem way too happy today. :D

MSG? I've never really understood that one...and don't most places now have a 'no MSG' policy? I've seen it in lots of windows. Don't know much about it except a bunch of people have adverse reactions to it?

I don't care. I love Chinese food...mostly hunan shrimp and rice with lots of veggies. I don't care too much for the broccoli but love the zucchini, the bell peppers, and for some odd reason the water chestnuts. Those are really good.
The honey chicken, sweet and sour chicken, pepper chicken, and some sort of spicy glazed chicken and veggies is really good too. Oh and vegetable lo mein, with the wide noodles is awesome.

Here is a start to understanding the 'problems' with MSG, LK.

In short, no correlation between MSG and negative effects has ever been proven.

In fact, anything containing hydrolyzed protein contains MSG.

Banana Leaf in Philadelphia is just brilliant. Awesome Malaysian food, great heat in all the dishes, all the dishes are vibrant with beautiful colors and every dish has a unique twist to it.

The Roti Canai sauce is something I would buy by the bottle if I could.

I don't really like Mandarin style Chinese, but some of the dishes are quite tasty.

Thanks Neph, that explains why I haven't heard much about the 'evils' of MSG in a long time.

Wow, do a google search on MSG and you're liable to see all kinds of warnings from headaches to your bunghole falling out.

Where's the positive side? Maybe I should start a movement.

Hippies 4 MSG.

Yeah, that's one of those cases where I'm just not onboard with the science. I've had bad reactions, lots of jitteriness, that type of thing.

I was mainly shooting for the humorous angle, though.

What are you getting these reactions from?

It's quite hard to find things that honestly have no MSG in them. Most "MSG free" labels are, honestly, loads of bull- it's not just a synthetic additive that you can put in/take out. Basically, if you ferment wheat, you get MSG.

It's the salt form of an amino acid that is found in just about every protein you consume- it's even a form occasionally found to be transitionally made within your body.

When you digest proteins (of which glutamate is pretty common) you break it down into the glutamate anion, before it can be used in building up your body proteins. Since the most common counterion in the human system is sodium, you are quite likely to get a decent amount of MSG in you from eating pretty much any protein- plants, animals, etc.

Hence why a lot of studies have found that if you give people MSG without them knowing, they don't show the symptoms that they do when you tell them something has MSG in it.

Just something to think on.

I get it occasionally from Chinese food that tastes like it has a lot of MSG in it. I usually don't think of it until after I've eaten something, but I definitely noticed some shakes, similar to if I had drank about 10 cups of coffee, but worse (and trust me, I've drank 10 cups of coffee and can identify a caffeine buzz!).

Really, without going into TMI territory, I've experienced other side effects that I've thought might be from MSG. All anecdotal, of course. Jack in the Box, for instance, routinely makes me suffer, in ways that other fast food doesn't. Can't be all bad beef or bad food handling.

I'll stick with LSD, thanks.

Oh, and also what I meant for LK is that it may be the "flavor enhancing" qualities of MSG that explain why she likes it so much.

Its the 6th flavor. Umami. Also known as "Savory".

So, we have sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and Savory. I think there's one more I'm forgetting.

No, no, it's just the four, plus Umami. Western cultures just go for the first four, while Asian (and especially Japanese) add "savory." I'd always read that Westerners were never entirely convinced that savory is anything unique.

As usual, Wikipedia goes into way too much detail on this subject, and my eyes start to glaze over.

Most chinese food doesnt really need extra msg to make it tastey, of course they also use a fusion of flavours to enhance.

E.g. most soups mum makes contains more than 1 type of meat as base. The most common being normal pork, salt dried pork and chicken feet. (Yes i know how it sounds) Bones and skin is where most of the flavours of the meat are sitting.

"if they taste our food, they are gonna know we're not canadian. Our food has taste". hehe >=P

Chinese food is manna from Heaven as far as I am concerned.

Unfortunately the sheer amount of salt and saturated fat prevents from eating more than 1/month or so.

I dont like the fast food chinese so much. There is a really good chinese restaurant by us though, with fresh, high end ingredients, no MSG, more geared towards being "healthy" that is really great. The beef and eggplant is delish.

I made some impromptu white people hunan sauce with what I had in the fridge today...it actually turned out really really good:

Apricot preserves
Ketchup
White Rice Wine Vinegar
Soy Sauce
Rooster Sauce
Minced garlic
Black pepper

I mixed it up with some shrimp and broccoli and put it over rice. It was pretty tasty.
