Just watching these again; and once again I find myself thinking... Wow, these are so much better than the books they are based on. And these were just amazing mini-series as well.

Movies were okay for a sci-fi adaptation. But the books are still miles better than these. Seriously?

I would rather be stuck with no other books to read than V.C. Andrews than have to read Frank Herbert again.

I felt Herbert was too long winded in the wrong places, and then when he finally did get to a good place to be long winded in... he went on about the wrong details.

Do I really need a paragraph and a half telling me how an individual drop of sweat ran down Paul Atreides face? not so much.

The story premise itself is awesome, but I disliked the delivery.

Amusing, I really liked the first book, everything after that was horrible. There is a good reason for that. John Campbell edited the first book, Dune, and it was a huge success. John Campbell passed away and the published wanted more so Herbert gave them all the junk Campbell had thrown away for books two and three. By then Herbert was too big a success and people kept buying the crap he threw out. he still sold well, but nowhere near as well as the first book. Herbert's son was writing the books long before Herbert passed himself.

John Campbell's passing was the worst thing to happen to that series. Herbert needed a good editor, too bad they never gave him one again.

The first movie was horrible. Never bothered with anything after that.

I loved both of these movies. Probably the two best Sci Fi channel movies ever, IMHO. The Children of Dune soundtrack is amazing! If you've seen ANY movie trailers in the last few years, you've probably heard part of the soundtrack.



Might be worth checking both of these out, Micheal. Much, much better than the original Dune movie from the 80's.

Do they have real ornithopters in these movies? That would make it worth watching right there.

Not really. They look ok, and much better than the original movie, but nothing like a real ornithopter.

Also, throwing in a link to a video of the actress that plays Alia. She does a fantastic job, IMO. And she's very easy on the eyes.

Anyway, I highly recommend both movies, even though I think Children of Dune is the better of the two. They are both well worth the time invested to watch them.

James McAvoy as Leto II is really good casting as well.

Alec Newman as Paul Atreides is much better than Kyle Mclaughlin.

And William Hurt as Leto Atreides was MUCH better than Jürgen Prochnow. But I think Hurt is a better actor in general.

The stillsuits were more believable as desert attire than black leather.

The Worms looked better.

There was no "Weirding Module" to turn sounds into a weapon.

The Guild Navigators did not look like disembodied sentient vajayjays.

Barbora Kodetová as Chani is much better looking and much more of a decent fit as an exotic otherworldly beauty than Sean Young.

And as much as I like Patrick Stewart; Gurney Halleck was played better by P.H. Moriarty. Stewart is not believable in the role, where you could believe Moriarty was a rough and tumble master at arms who was at one time enslaved by House Harkonnen.

And oh most importantly... not as much of the stupid narration all done in Paul's Head like in the 80s version; Newman's Paul actually says the words.

I own both of them on DVD. I also own the original Dune on DVD as well, one side is the theatrical and the other side is the "extended cut" directed by Alan Smithee. (side 1 David Lynch. side 2 Allen Smithee.. hrm...)

I did not know that! That explains it then. I loved the first book, and I've read it several times. But I could never get into Dune Messiah, although I tried more than once. It didn't even seem like the same author wrote the book. Now I know why.

Maybe I will try giving it another read. I read the book(s) years ago.

I was able to enjoy all six books, but I guess I'm weird. I would have to say though that Chapterhouse was mixed for me.

Holy crap i just looked at the official site and there's eleven more books beyond the original six. I Read House Atreides and House Harkonnen years ago but I never really followed whether they continued on with the series beyond that. Has anyone read them?
