...when you're in another state?!

Gah! How do you know which ones are safe, which ones are clean...half of them don't have websites that list vacancies, and the other half have good reviews mixed with terrible, awful, horrible reviews that scare with tales of disgust and crime.

Gaaaaahhhhhh!!!! /spazflail

My wife and I had to fly to CA to get her tested before she could be admitted into a CA school for her certification and we searched and chose an apartment with little time to spare during our time here.

Where are you looking? Crowdsource it on the Glade.

Not much time to look, but my son and stepson both live in Murfreesboro. I'll ask them to do a quick look for you in the morning FarSky. They may have a few suggestions.

Damn! I was all set to hit the achievement of responding to every forum but I was undone by your popularity.

Was there some announcement about this recently or is this as out of the blue for you as it is for me?

Thankee, Jasmy. :)

And no, this was as last-minute to us as anyone else. Well, sort of; we knew my job was going to be moving me, but the plans just solidified today. :)

They did buy a house. Hopefully they will be able to rent it while the market is down.

Looks like I'll be doing the same thing soon as well 'Sky. Good luck, and let me know if you learn anything to ease the process.

That's my hope as well Micheal.

Try posting on craigslist for suggestions in the area and then look those apartments up on line and compare floor plans, etc, etc.

Yikes, tough sudden deadline, Farsky...but grats!

Online reviews of apartment complexes is a total crapshoot. But mostly the only people who review apartments online have an axe to grind with the place...and lots of them are immature idiots who don't understand leases or sometimes even being an adult.

Since time is so precious that you won't likely have a chance to go up and look on the weekends before the move, I'd say get a storage place and live in a suite-style hotel for as much as the first month (if none of Jasmy's friends have any good leads) and check out the places yourself. That's how my parents did it when we moved from Michigan to Arizona...we moved out of the hotel and into a short-term lease condo only when our house started construction.

Usually I either take a trip there beforehand and check out apartments in person. If I can't do that then once I get there I stay in a hotel for a few days/weeks until I can find a good place,

I'm making a trip up to Music City today, and will be looking for apartments tomorrow and Saturday. I still just feel so...lost. I don't know the area, I don't have a way to get a good read on the quality of the communities, and I'm having to canvas the apartments quickly and pray that not only do I find one that I like (i.e. is clean and safe), but that it has a vacancy in a suitable floorplan.

On top of all this, in under two weeks I'm going to be leaving the area in which I was born, raised, and have lived ever since, and leaving my parents behind, which sucks, because we've always been close and usually get together for dinner every couple of weeks. We're going to Nashville, which I love, and we've got relatives there (good ones, fun ones, not annoying or detrimental ones), so that's good. Phe's turning in her notice at work today, so she'll be able to move up with me about a week after I go up. That's helped a lot. I just feel kinda adrift right now.

Can your relatives in Nashville help with the apartment hunting? They should know what areas are good or bad.

What's your commute tolerance like? I don't know where you'll be working, or how far you're willing to drive, but a nice suburb like Franklin kind of circumvents the whole "where in Nashville" conundrum. Would you rather be in metro Nashville, or 15-20 miles out in the 'burbs?

I called my son just a few minutes ago. He will be getting with his brother and sister in law this afternoon and will ask them for suggestions, but for now he suggests Craigslist and to stay away from East Nashville. Hopefully I'll have more information for you later, FarSky.

Good luck!

One thing I learned when checking out appartments is to bring toilet paper with you while out doing this.

Seconded on not living in East Nashville, unless you go far enough east that you're not really in Nashville any more, like Mt. Juliet might be okay. Brentwood (south) is a little closer in than Franklin, and would probably be nice too.

As a general tool, you might play around with something like Trulia or Zillow, and see what real estate values are like in any given area, and think accordingly. The pricier places are probably going to be in more desirable neighborhoods, and from there you can look and see what apartments are in the area and whether they fit what you're looking for. Really ballpark though, and it's been a while since I spent much time in Nashville (my brother lived there ~15 years ago), look south.

Farsky, having made a similar move before (Minneapolis to Dallas) the biggest recommendation I can make is to try and sign a 6 month lease to start with. That way if you've chosen poorly, or you've found a better location/community you only have to tough it out for 6 months before being able to settle into the "right" place.

I second the 6 mo lease- that's what I did when I moved to New Orleans last fall.

I ended up really liking the place I got, and have been here almost a year- but a lot of the other students that moved down ended up in year leases- and wished they had been able to move after 6 mos.

Craigslist is where I ended up finding a place. I also recommend making liberal use of google maps, especially the street view- it gives you a chance to 'walk' the surrounding area and get a feel for it.

It doesn't match up to actually walking through the area, but I was able to find a lot of places I definitely didn't want to live with it.

Then I'd suggest lining up as many possibilities as you can when you go visit- more choices is always better.

Good luck with the move!
