I bought an air popper machine thingy, because I heard popcorn is a relatively healthy snack food, and air popping is the healthiest way to do it. The issue I have is that the popcorn always turns out rather bland. Apparently, since it's air popped, the popcorn doesn't have any fat from oil coating it so none of the seasonings stick to it.

I read that using a butter flavored cooking spray helps keep the flavoring on the popcorn. I tried that and used this bottle of "movie theater butter" powder stuff. It still doesn't taste very good at all. Even using (in my mind) a lot of cooking spray and a lot of the powder stuff, it's very inconsistent and not very appealing.

So, 1) is it worth it to try to do air popped popcorn and add my own flavorings afterwards? Is it much worse to just buy microwave popcorn and not deal with the hassle? 2) If it's worth it to use air popped popcorn, does anyone have a recommendation to make the popcorn tastier?

I use to make microwaved popcorn.. by drowning the little kernels in butter and it usually comes out good. I don't think healthy alternatives taste as good.

You could try pouring the melted butter (with disolved flavouring) into the air popped popcorn. Just put the popcorn in a big bag and give it a good shake after each pour. It's not healthy, but it's certainly yummah~!

Have you tried one of these: Camp Chef Popcorn Popper? I always put in a little oil, but the product descriptions suggest that you don't need to.

I've used one for about ... crap, 35 years now. They really make the best popcorn, I think because you get a higher heat.

Man, there are so many other healthy foods out there that taste good without adding stuff to, 'em.

But if it's popcorn you want, butter the hell out of it so you can enjoy it at least--otherwise you're just torturing yourself because you'll always be missing that butter lol.

Pop the corn, put it in a bowl with a little sugar and pour milk over it. Sounds odd but it is best breakfast cereal ever.
