I don't have one, but I would like to be able to sip it straight so I can get a real appreciation for it.

Suggestion? I'd be okay with up to $100 for a bottle for a starter if it's sure to be good.

If it helps, rye seems to be my least-favorite.

Irish - Tullamore Dew
Scotch, Single Malt - Glenfarclas or an older Laphroiag, many other single malts are well worth the sipping.
Scotch, Blended - some of the Johnnie Walker blends are pretty good, have tried Blue and Green and was impressed.
Bourbon - don't care for bourbon but Maker's Mark is okay, and about where I would start.
Rye - Is this whiskey? Really? No clue.
Japanese - Karuizawa - compares favorably to the best single malts, much to my surprise and delight.

After not touching alcohol at all for almost 20 years, I've found I no longer have the can't stop once started problem, hallelujah. I don't drink often, and always just one with or after dinner if I indulge at all. That being said, why go for the cheap stuff.

Bourbons are almost always a good place to start, but avoid the mistake of going for things like Bulleit or Wild Turkey. Woodford Reserve is not too harsh on the checkbook and makes a good starting point for whiskey in general.

Occasionally I'll have a Crown Royal and ginger ale, or Maker's Mark. Mostly I stick to single malt Scotch. My favorite is Glenmorangie (yes, Khross, I've tried the older Macallans, still like my Glenmorangie)

Oh, and Michael, Rye is Canadian whiskey. They keep the good stuff to themselves though, and ship the leftovers mixed with piss to us.

Thanks Damaged, I knew it was Canadian whiskey, though I've never had one that rises above well whiskey. I gave up on them before I quit drinking in the very late 80s, never bothered trying anything more modern.

I'll check out Woodford Reserve some time Khross, I respect your elitish, snobbish, might as well eat and drink the best tasting stuff you can afford, taste. It matches my own in many ways (except depth of wallet).

I bought a bottle of johnnie walker blue on my way back from the Us and have been eyeing it for a while. Not sure if I'm ready for the plunge...

Bourbon is good stuff and easy on the pallet. Never mind the fact that your Jameson is aged in discarded Labrot & Graham casks, right? Afterall, nearly every whiskey on the planet is aged in bourbon casks. Bourbon being almost unique in its use of virgin casks for aging.

I think part of what gives single malt scotch some of it's character is the fact that it is aged in used bourbon casks. Many single malt variants also do a second, shorter aging in another cask, such as sherry, for added character.

There is a lot of cheap swill bourbon out there. There are also some very nice ones. Most people who order bourbon get the cheap stuff, so they equate it all to swill. It's like drinking blended scotch (which is tasteless piss in my less than humble opinion) and expecting single malt to be the same.

Eh, each different "appellation" has it's uses. I find Irish Whiskey to be so different from Bourbon and Highland Scotch to be so different from Lowland...eh, you get the point.
I've enjoyed a Jameson (Hopwin, I hear ya laddie) with a PBR back as much as sipping a 25 year old Lagavulin with a Cuban Partagas.

I like pretty much all types of whiskey. I just find Jameson to be swill of the worst sort. For the beginning whiskey drinker, you want something smooth, easy to drink, and relatively simple. Woodford Reserve accomplishes that at a really reasonable price. And, on top of that, it's a fantastic whiskey.

Khross I'm curious how you would rate the blue label or if it's just a hype?

My palate is probaby not as refined as Khross', but after tasting both, I couldn't justify the price difference between Gold and Blue. I just went with Gold. Blue's a (very) fine blended Scotch. In the end, folks will be impressed by the packaging.
