The Glade 4.0

So.....
Columbus MS to Newport OR. Leaving Columbus on May 1 and coming back on June 1, but must be in Oregon by the 14th. Preferably no more than 5 hours driving a day, camping is cool, educational stops a must.

Questions:
What route to take? (Must be relatively "safe"...woman and child traveling alone but maybe bringing large dog for protection.)
How much would everything cost? (Assuming rental vehicle is @$1000mth unlimited mileage in the USA)

If I want to go I have to submit a "proposal" to my uncle to try and get the fundage and he is a stickler for details.....but before I submit said proposal I want to see if this is actually feasible or not.

This would be a pilgrimage to go and say goodbye to my childhood home before they hand over the keys and very likely the last time that my siblings and I would all be together until the next funeral. So, kind of important. But I want to take my time and do some homeschooling/educational/scenic stuff along the way.

Its ~3000 miles taking the southern route. So, depending on the rental vehicle, figure $3 a gallon for gas @ 25mpg. Prolly $400 in just gas. Figure how many stops you can make. You're going to be doing a *lot* of driving either way. Figure how many hours you want to drive in a day safely. I wouldn't go more than 10. There's a whole lot of boring in the middle of the country Take audiobooks.

Sounds similar to what my mom and I did when I started homeschooling. We did Louisiana to Montana, but similar.

I'd go north- hit up the Badlands in North/South Dakota- they are absolutely gorgeous.

Try this route- it's about 3300 miles, and takes you through the badlands, you get a stop in Salt Lake City (and you have to go swim in the great salt lake!), you get a stop in Yellowstone, although it will probably be crowded, and you get a nice drive across Montana- should be gorgeous in the summer.

Might I suggest one route for the trip out and the other route for the trip home? That way you get to see the sights in a lot more places!

Aye, that's what we did- go north on the way out, south on the way back. Or the other way around, depending on the time of the year/weather.

Of course, it's also summer. And the midwest in the summer is hot. Very hot. Which makes me lean towards a more northern route.

Well, if we do go (big IF) then I would probably take the southern route there and just drive straight through TX since we've been there a lot. We want to take our time on the way back. I dunno. Great ideas though, thanks.

If you are going to take the southern route, get on 40 west to California, then take 5 north straight through to Oregon. It's very easy...I took that route a couple years ago when I was taking my son's furnishings to Tennessee. Three days out and three days back, driving 12 to 16 hours a day...but I wasn't sightseeing or homeschooling!

Be sure to get some maps from Google or use a GPS! There are some twists and turns near Tehachapi! (I got lost there on the way home, but I was sick coming home! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!! )

You got lost near Tehachapi?! Wow, I must be local by now, I could drive there in my sleep.

Of course, you will have to stop and see the Tehachapi Loop if you do go by there. I'm not a train geek, but I dig it. I was gonna suggest Yellowstone, but looks like that's already been covered. Go to the Roadside America website, you can find all sorts of quirky stuff to see along the way.

No its not. I don't want to whiz by everything, but that's just a guesstimate. It'll probably be more during the boring parts, haha!

And yeah, if I do go, I want to go through Cali and see where I was born. I also would like to find out where my birth father's body is. He died in the town I was born in, Modesto, in 1996. I would like to pay my respects but have no idea where his remains are.

Heh you were born in Modesto? I grew up just south of there, near Hanford.

Sweet! Are you adopted? Heh, I have 6 brothers and sisters somewhere that I have never met.
I have not seen Modesto since I was a baby, so obviously I don't know much about it.

Nope, though I did have a deadbeat dad who was in the military and bailed once the divorce was final, my mom remarried, and he could get rid of my sister and myself.

He's on my list of people who I plan on kicking in the balls next time I see him.

Well, if you know anyone in the area who can help me find his body that would rock! His name was Dewey Elvis Hall and he died in I think April of 1996 in Modesto. PM me if you need more details.
