Prayers for a successful reboot of the puppy incoming!

Thank you all for your thoughts. the second kick start worked, however they are not sure for how long. The other option they are exploring is to give him a doggie kidney transplant. Unfortunately this is way over my budget and not something I could go with atm. (anything from 5k to 10k+)

I'm going to be taking him home this afternoon to see if he will eat at home (he hasn't eaten for almost 2 weeks now). I kinda feel so helpless with everything left up to chance... If anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate hearing it, cause I feel so out of my depth in this.

We're still pulling for him Lyd. My suggestion is to love him up; sorry I don't have much more to offer.

I need some advice on how to get dogs to eat again. He could go on meds if only he'll eat, but he's not eating, even his favourite foods. I kinda only have around 4 hours to get him to eat before he has to go back to the vet, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Chicken broth on his food, perhaps? Make it kind of moist (I'm thinking you give him dry food); if it's too wet, they won't eat it, I think.

he use to love eating peanut butter (yes yes I know) but now he wont eat it or anything else. He'd drink water, but as soon as any semblance of food comes close to him, he clamps up completely >.<

I can force feed him, but that doesnt solve the problem...

Oh, gosh...if he wont even eat peanut butter...try everything Lydiaa...bacon, ham, canned food, dry food, rice, even steak. If he won't eat he won't survive. Sorry to be so blunt, but I've been through this with my own baby three years ago and sometimes you have to make that hard decision.

Well some good news. His spirit is up and apart from the eating thing he's still pretty good. Soooo... after sweet talking the vet, they're going to help with home care. Basically he's gonna be on watered down milk until he gets his blood retested on friday. Hopefully being home means he'll be able to recouperate better. In the mean time I've bought a syringe and mum's agreed to make nutritious congee for him (boiled rice and meat/veges in a pressure cooker so it's almost a gravy consistency, then with the chunky bit filtered out) and feed him slowly through the syringe. I'm not giving up on him yet, and I will use all my manipulative powers to get the best help I can for him.

I might not be able to get him a new liver, but I'm going to try my hardest to heal his current ones.

Be careful what people food you give him, a lot of "healthy" food gives dogs diahrrea which would be very bad for him. Try using garlic on whatever you do end up feeding him, dogs like food with a strong scent.

Good luck with the feeding! One of my dogs was so sick once the vet didn't have much hope for him and he wouldn't eat or drink so I used a syringe and force fed him gatorade....once he was hydrated he started eating again.

Thanks for all the advice guys! We're hopeful that he'll recover and not going to give up until the last minute.

Unfortunately he wont eat anything solid yet, so feeding him food that wont give him running poopoo is not yet an option. (In other news, I am now probably half way ready to change diapers without pulling faces.)

Rynar, could you boil wild rice to a gravy consistency? Unfortunately without the syringe, we don't currently have a way of feeding him.

Lk, our problem atm is trying to keep weight on him so he will have enough time to recover by himself. As long as his kidneys are not 100% he won't eat (or thats what the vet told me) but the longer time we give him, the more likely the kidney are to restart themselves without the poison in his system. Unfortunately because he wont eat, he won't last long enough and it is time we're battling atm.

Sounds like you are doing exactly the right thing then, Lydiaa. Go go mommy instincts! Looks like your lil boo is in good hands.

To tell you the truth LK... After this whole episode, I don't think I want kids for at least another 10 years... I'm already running around like a headless chook. I hate to think what I would be like if this was my child >.<

Lydiaa, Teddy is part of your family, just like a child! It's very hard when your family member is sick! Just hang in there and do the best you can (which I know you are doing now)!

Lydiaa, Jasmy is right. You are experiencing parenthood. Teddy is your baby, he is sick, and you are being a good mommy. I think you would do just fine with human children. *hugs* Hope your baby gets better soon!!!

I know it's ultimately the dog's health that matters, but for what it's worth you're handling this well Lydiaa! Keep at it. All of us are probably happy to hear it, and more importantly, I'm sure Teddy is too.

Here's to hoping for a good outcome. They can be surprisingly resilient critters...

Wasn't much, just some pork belly skin (with fat attached) but he ate on his own without any forcing... wheeeeeee~~~!!!
