Diamande Thunderbow on Thelias. Someone stole my name, damn it!

Traps can be pretty fun. Some of them are downright nasty, especially on Elite.

The best part is, if you have a rogue/monk/ranger with high reflex save and Improved Evasion, they can pull the mobs back and forth through some of the traps to kill the mobs. Some people have even solo'ed some dungeons on Elite this way. But I don't recommend trying that if you're new.

I rerolled after realizing that THF will always be the stepchild vs TWF. I refuse to use kopeshes (or any other weapon that starts with a "k") though.

This time I plan to make it off the island.

Are you saying that in DDO, THF is worse than TWF? Because in actual DnD, its quite the opposite.

So seems to be the conclusion of those who spend way too much time creating spreadsheets and crunching numbers. They seem to revel in telling pnp DnD players that this isn't pnp.

That should be blindingly obvious to anyone who creates a character.

Ohhh ok then. So this is about two handed weapons vs. dual wield.

Made a character named Solarth on Thelias, have not played much past the very start yet.

How do you open the spell book?

Spells are a tab in your Character Sheet ("c" by default). I think you have to be in a tavern to swap spells around.

Is a Dwarf Fighter a good soloer? That seemed to be the implication of the character select screen. I've been having fun with it, now 2nd level.

That's what Artorr is, and I've been having fun with it. I am able to solo fairly well, though it really varies which quests I can do up to Hard on. Elite is usually out of the question. I actually like having a good group, but sometimes that can take forever to put together, so I find myself going it solo often.

Being my first character since returning, I decided to lift a build plan from the forums. I will post a link to it tonight when I get home. I'm level 6 now and I just trained Kensei->Greataxe last night before logging off to watch Fringe. I like THF with the Greataxe, even if it may not be as fast at single target take-down, it does have Glancing Blow now which gives you AoE fun! If you are tactical about combat, you can really do well while taking a minimal amount of damage in most situations.

Huh, interesting. I don't understand all the build stuff yet. I did a quest last night ... the one where you talk to Heyton and help defend him, on Normal setting. I lost 3 hp (out of 61) through the entire thing. Maybe I should start trying the Hard setting.

Now, I just have to find Misery's Peak.

Oh, and can the DDO.com forums be any more annoying? Don't they understand that white lettering on black is really hard on the eyes, and that the whole site design screams "I'm not working at work!!" - ? Only thing I can see to change on the user CP is the color of the accents, etc.

OK, home now. Here is a link to the build I am basing Artorr on. I'm no expert on building characters but to me, this sounded like a good starter character to play. YMMV.

I think that's my problem with builds. I don't have that much long-term concentration (same thing happened with Eve. I can't think that far ahead). And, you get random rolls to begin with, no? I don't particularly remember allocating points to STR, DEX, etc.

If you pick one of the pre-determined "Paths" when creating your character, then no, you don't allocate points to your stats.

If you select "Customize" instead, then yes, you can use a "28 point" buy system to apply to your stats as you see fit. You can also eventually unlock "32 point" builds, which you get when you accumulate 1700 total favor points on any single character. Not sure if this is available for Free accounts to unlock, though.

So, trying to solo with a Cleric, not so much fun. Made a ranger. Got up to level 3 already, having a lot of fun with it. The question I have is this. Why in the hell is everything so dark? Do I have to carry a torch around with me? I fell off a ledge today, hit a pipe on my way down and died just like that. Am I doing something wrong?

I have not had that problem at all, so it is probably a video setting.

I'm assuming they have the lowlight vision for most classes(darkvision for others), so maybe you're just playing a blind human and can't see well in the dark?

Ah, thanks, that's it. I just went with a path with my first character. That helps on the 32-point build thing, too. Ran across that term a couple of days ago, didn't know what it meant.

So, I made it out of Korthos to Stormreach. Not sure if I'll keep going with it, though. Is most experience done through quests? Seems very linear to me right now, just wondering if I can go find a wilderness and start grinding. I guess I like grinding; maybe EQ ruined me.

You might try adjusting the gamma. To my knowledge that's about all you could do. Nor torches that I have ever seen.

Unfortunately, no special vision. I wish there was.

The vast majority of xp will come from quests.

There are some wilderness areas like Cereluan Hills (sp) and Searing Heights (as well as others), but there is a finite amount of xp available from each of these. Find 20/20 Points of Interest, Kill X number of inhabitants, Kill these 10 Random Rare Encounter Mobs. Once you finish those for whichever particular zone, you won't receive any more "grinding" type xp from that area.

Yes. Don't walk off ledges.

Funny, that's one of the things that's been annoying me - the inability to walk off of ledges or into certain areas.

EQ really was a lethal game, no?

I've done it twice and not been quick enough to click on the featherfall cloak I have. I jacked up the brightness this morning, soooo much better.
