I've had a problem for a while now with random crashes. No particular event seems to happen when it does it. I get a frozen screen with the game picture having some visual artifacts (lines, messed up color, etc)....the mouse won't move, and I can't toggle back to windows. I have to do a hard reset.

Occationally, after a few moments, it will unstick and put me in safe mode with a box saying something like nv4_dll incurred an error. When I look up the error in my admin tools I get a descriptor that says this......"The driver nv4_disp for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates."

I've d'loaded the new drivers everytime they come out. But still this problem continues. I have an nvidia 8600gt 512mb card that seems to be fine with everything else.

Any ideas?

I'm about ready to just buy a cheaper ATI card and see if that solves this junk.

Okay....any ideas for around $100?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150482

This one caught my eye, but not sure with the xpac on the horizon. I think this one only has dx10.

Also, would a stock 400W PS be a problem, or would that need upgrading as well?

thanks

DirectX 11 is a gimmick. It's not a particularly significant change; I wouldn't really consider it in graphics card selection.

It's hard to say on the power supply without knowing what else is drawing power. What kind of processor are you running, and how many disc drives (hard discs, optical discs)?

Something's screwing with the video card, in any case. It could either be the driver (though this is unlikely if you've gone through different revisions), the card itself, bad RAM corrupting the driver while resident in memory, or power/bus issues interfering with the card's operation. These are the most likely culprits, probably in that order.

Processor is Core2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz

WinXP Serv Pack 3

Ram is 3 sticks of Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model 991527

PS is just the stock 400W that came in my case: APEVIA X-CRUISER

On board sound: Realtek HD

Mobo: ASUS PN5-D

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT with latest driver

The reason I think it's the video card messing up, is on my DX diag tool, it says under display, that the Main Driver: nv4_disp.dll And that is what is showing up in the error message.

I keep my PC dust free and pretty sure it's not a temp problem. All fans working well, 3 case fans, etc. One thing I did notice last night was when it happened I was on Ventrilo, and the person's message was looping over and over a few times.

My instinct says a 400W case-standard power supply is just not enough for what you're running. The reason it's so random is that it's probably only when the system hits a full load and hits that wattage wall. I would replace the PS before the vid card (any newer "higher powered" vid card is going to require more power anyway).

Have you completely uninstalled the drivers or do you keep "patching" them?

Have done both a fresh install and used the upgrade tool from nvidia. Neither had a different outcome.

Just found an upgrade to the Realtek driver, that wasn't listed on the ASUS board site. Realtek's site says it's for their IC, and may not work properly (check your mobo site). But I tried it anyways, and it works so far. Hopefully this will allow me to check that off the list......

Cleaned what dust was in the case today (a bit had built up but not much). Took the fan/heatsink off the video card and cleaned it (hopefully didn't mess anything up there).

Played a few hours last night and had no problems......so it's a wait and see thing I guess.

thanks

Awesome, thanks! I was looking at everything last night and couldn't decide on any of it. I don't know the difference between 1 rail and multiple rails for example. And some PSU brands just seem very over priced imho.

If your power supply is not SeaSonic, you fail.

They're just pretty well-known for being the most reliable PSU company out there. Corsair will also re-brand SeaSonic units occasionally.

Update:

So I installed a new Corsair HX650 PSU and new 4770hd xfx video card. Haven't had anymore ingame crashes or lockups, but I have been having some occational problems out of game.

I am getting small vertical lines that start to appear down on my toolbar, and anything I mouse over like desktop icons. I restart my computer, at which time it goes to the whole screen with vertical lines. After restart, they are gone, but may return at random. I tried to read up on info at ATI's site and xfx site, and did find some others mentioning this problem, but I'm not smart enough to understand what techinical steps they are taking in trying to resolve this, if any.

I since downloaded a free to use program on cnet called Advanced SystemCare, which does a lot of things. One being it cleans my registry. I do this everytime I start up, and it seems to help keep the lines from happening most of the time.

The lines never show up when I play WoW, but after I play WoW when I return to surfing the net or the machine just sits idle. Not sure why.

Other than that, I love the new card. I'm getting up to 200fps in game at times with things turned about half max. I do get the occational 25fps in Dalaran at times, but overall the performance has been a lot better than my old 8600gt.

The lines sound like corrupted or heat-sensitive video memory. Maybe RMAing the video card would help.

Well, I am no expert, so this may sound dumb on my part ;) But, it has only happened maybe 4 or 5 times since I have had it.......? 2 weeks? And it has been with the system either sitting idle, or just browsing the web. It has not given any problems while playing WoW at all.

And maybe it's just in my head, but since I started running this program to fix registry errors, it seems to keep it from happening. Might just be luck on my part though.

I will keep an eye on it, and if it keeps doing it or gets worse, I will definitly RMA it. XFX stated they give a double lifetime on the card? I think......... although since it's a 4770.....they may not have any laying around in the future

thanks for the feedback

Ah, only while idle or web, okay, that changes things slightly. Sounds like a borderline bad 2d processor chip. Same recommendation -- if it gets worse or persists, RMA it.
