Interesting.

It'd be a close match-up. Beastie Boys can cut rhymes with the best of em, and they seem pretty street tough.

Same with Run DMC.

What influenced your choices? How about a current-day match up?

Asher Roth vs. Eminem

Was starting with the classics.

DMX vs LL Cool J would be another interesting one.

Not familiar with Tonedeff or Asher Roth, but I know Eminem can rap circles around most people. Busta Rhymes . . . eh, never really been a fan.

Run DMC 100% on both counts.

Tonedeff and Busta are from two different schools of hip-hop. Tone feels like he has to tell a story in each of his songs, and generally does so very well. Busta doesn't care what the **** he's saying half the time, as long as he says it as fast as he can.

Asher Roth isn't even in the same solar system as Eminem. The only similarity they have is that they're white and make music.

I'll admit that Busta/Em are better than Tone/Asher, but I was having a hard time thinking of examples at the time :p

Edit- lol, after listening to the "I'm so Hood" remix I can't believe Lil Wayne even gets paid money anymore. He's **** terrible. He tried to rhyme Kelsey Grammer with Alka Seltzer sandwich.

I do think Tonedeff is a great talented guy, especially some of his feature work with Cunning Linguists (even their name is cunning!). However, Busta is one of those rare talents that managed to actually blow up fairly big. I'd dare put him in the same league as old school Bone Thugs.

And yes Weezy sucks. I hate him. His rap is utterly terrible, he doesn't have a unique, precise, technical, creative or fast flow. His voice is annoying. His lyrical content downright blows, and that's saying something considering the current state of hip-hop. He's ugly. He's short. He can't sing for ****.

Yet he's utterly huge. Probably the biggest rapper of 2008-2010.

And as bad as he is on Hood Remix, Ludacris and Busta are that good.

Jay-Z over all listed, especially Dre, as Dre has never been a free-styler.

Luda over Twista hands down.

I think you guys fail to realize that Jay-Z has effectively freestyled every song he's created throughout his entire career, and that most producers say the only other rapper to do so was Notorious B.I.G.

That effectively, given the number of hit albums he's had, makes him the best freestyle rapper of all time, currently alive.

The more of their work I hear, the more I think the Beastie Boys' are superior to Run DMC . . . but not by a wide margin. I guess, maybe it's because the BBs also delve into hard rock, which they can meld with rap.

Also, not only are they one of the longest running rap acts, but they are white boys to boot. Pretty nice accomplishment in a Black-dominated genre.

To say that he freestyles is a little misguided. He doesn't write anything down, but he goes over every verse in his head and memorizes what he wants. Also, he often only records one verse at a time.

Correct.

However, that "every verse in his head" originates spontaneously, which is why I said "effectively" freestyles. Furthermore: all rappers only record one verse at a time, and most use far more takes.

While Jay has admittedly fallen way off the top of his game, his lyrical prowess is some of the best out there.

If Talib Kwali could freestyle, he'd be the **** though.

I still wouldn't even say effectively freestyles. All he's doing is cutting out a pen from the equation. He still goes over all of his lines in his head and memorizes them. He has an entire song figured out before he gets in front of a mic, and then he's just reciting what he's already memorized.

Just doesn't write it down. At best, we can say the guy's got a good memory. Still no freestyle, though.

What other rapper follows that process?

Making up an entire verse ad-hoc to a beat, without pen and paper, is a freestyle. Just because he then memorizes it really doesn't mean anything...

Actually I take that back, what it means is that he retains what his brain just came up with off the top of his head, which is incredibly rare.

So if he walks around repeating and refining the same verses in his head for an entire day, does that still count as freestyle?

Naturally, no.

The original mental ad-hoc creation of the verse does. Memorization happens from that point.

I'm not trying to downplay Jay-Z's talent, but by that definition, any of us can be a great freestyle artist. All ideas are thought of on-the-fly, Jay just skips a step and doesn't bother writing them down. He's obviously a smart guy, being able to remember all of that without the need for paper, but it still doesn't make him awesome at freestyle.

What I'm trying to get at, is that if Jay were standing right in front of me this instant, he couldn't think of and spit out a rhyme as good as "99 Problems" or "Encore" off the top of his head.

My response is that he couldn't think of and spit out a song as good as "99 Problems" off the top of his head. Take any given verse from the song and he could though, because that's how he came up with it in the first place.



Regarding the first part of your statement: no, not everybody can do that. Not even close. There are plenty of people who think freestyling, even for 20 or 30 seconds is easy. They're wrong.
