and it mostly won.

Was cutting some veggies to throw in pasta that I was making. Apparently my knife is really sharp. Everything I've read and stuff about knife safety says you should cut with your hand kind of placed down holding whatever you're cutting. Your fingernails in a somewhat vertical position, so that if the knife hits them it will kind of slide off.

The sliding off part didn't happen, and my knife went right through the fingernail. Because of the way I had my hand, it mostly just shaved off most of the fingernail and the layer of skin underneath. It did bleed like crazy though, and I thought it was going to be much worse by the time I would get the bleeding stopped to take a look at it.

Had my dad take a look at it on his lunch break as he's a former emt, but he didn't think it'd need stitches or anything, so we just bandaged it and called it good.

The funny thing is that it hasn't hurt at all. There was the initial "oh ****" moment when the it first happened, but since then I haven't really even noticed it.

Though typing is sort of difficult when you have a big bandage on one finger. I keep hitting too many buttons.

I've done this. It blows. You are probably going to lose your fingernail for good, you realize, and when bandaging that bastard I would put a TON of neosporin or petroleum jelly on it, otherwise, when you go to change your bandages you are going to have to rip it open again... every single time.

Also, try to sleep with your hand elevated, otherwise the bastard is gonna throb all night.

For future reference, this is how it is done. Remember to ALWAYS keep your finger tips curled underneath your knuckle. Your knuckle is the guide, and the blade should never raise above it, it should be lightly against it.

Ouch dude, that sucks. Hope everything heals ok and that it continues to be relatively pain free.
Last time we had a knife thread, someone had stabbed themselves in the crotch I think. Can't remember who it was but something about their jeans protecting them from losing their nuts.

I've taken a couple cooking classes at the local fru fru grocery stores, and watching some of those people use knives makes me nervous.

I broke my finger tip (not thinking it was that bad), went to class, and moved 21 60 lb pipes the next day alone.

I didn't see the doctor until ~22 hours later.

Unfortunately, the nailbed went necrotic over time and it never healed right.

My sympathies.

I finally figured it out. Somebody's fishing for thread-killing stats...

Clearly you should have brought a gun to the knife fight.

Glad it didn't hurt much; it sounds awful *cringe*

Edit:

In this case, "I and my knife" would probably be more correct, since the knife is not a person.

Nah, I think they were trying to bury the psycho-thread.
