LOL. Especially at Hiroshi Yamauchi on the second page.

Okay, Cliffy B at the end cracked me up. I suppose, in a sense, it's true, though. The gameplay purpose of Gears of War is clearly to kill everything in sight with as much blood splatter as possible. And I'm remarkably okay with that.

It would have been more fun, I think, if the date (month/year) the quote hails from were included. I found myself really wondering when the two Nintendo ones were made.

The RPG comment was from an 1999 interview (with a bizarre little man who, this article notes, has never played a game in his life). Iwata's moment of dumbass came in May 2004.

Yeah, I figured if I weren't lazy they'd all be eminently Googleable.

So Iwata declared nobody'd want to play online games six months before WoW released. Heheh.

And then, of course, I still love the first 5 million PS3 owners thing, considering he clearly expects those to just fly off the shelves rather than take almost 2 years to clear.

Heh. I thought Iwata's comment was taken a bit out of context, especially since there ARE a lot of gamers that don't want to play stuff online. Outside of MMOs (strangely) I'm one of them, and the demographic that the Wii expanded into is probably similar. So I went looking.

Alas.

Quote:
But while Iwata's disdain for online play was clear, he would not abandon the concept altogether. "Online technology has its own interesting features, so I don’t rule out the possibility of making use of it for games," he said. Iwata also said that the industry would soon come around to his point of view. "Game companies now find it difficult to make online game businesses successful, and their enthusiasm for them is cooling," he predicted.

Does indeed go a bit beyond something like acknowledging that offline games always will have a place. :p
