I don't see why you guys care about these privacy issues so strongly. It doesn't affect your lives at all. You're just socially conditioned to think that privacy matters, and you don't even know why.

My desire for privacy stems from my own personal reasonings, not from being socially conditioned. If anything, I'd say we are being socially conditioned to not care about privacy these days.

The concept of privacy is part of Western culture... you only care about it because most other people care about privacy. You don't have solid reasons other than that. Therefore it is social conditioning.

However, I agree that organizations like Facebook are trying to steer people in the opposite direction.

You're telling me what I care about? May I ask how you know me so well?

Apparently, you know little about identity theft. Personal information is a very delicate thing. If you'd suffered, or known someone who's suffered from identity theft, you'd know how easily it can be to become a victim. Do you even know who Facebook is responsible for selling information to? Spyware companies are just one of the buyers for this information. Last I checked, spyware is a prime cause of information being leaked, potentially leading to identity theft.

Identity theft is only one of the many reasons I'd prefer to lead a private life, specifically with my personal information on the internet. The phone book is bad enough, offering numbers and addresses. Information even more personal than this shouldn't be taken lightly.

I can give you a more personal example of my desire for privacy, which is completely separate from the Facebook privacy issue. There's a person in my fiancée's past that's extremely dangerous. This person is currently in federal prison. If, whenever this person were to get out, I, her, and our little girl would be in great danger if this person were to get a hold of any personal information about us. When I say danger, I mean grave danger. Now, is my desire to keep our life private just social conditioning? No. It's about the bottom two tiers of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. There's a very real reason, though it doesn't just stem from the above example.

Privacy: The state of being free from unsanctioned intrusion.

Desire for information privacy stems from the same reason you don't want to leave your blinds open when you're having sex with your partner (unless you're into that sort of thing). Certain things should remain private.

I do wonder why some people post certain things online when they should know that they'll forever be recorded and viewable to the world. I've seen people at work get in trouble for posting things online in their own personal time. It's a shame they weren't socially conditioned, like me, or they wouldn't be in trouble with their employer.
