Puddle of water is located at the side of the house about 2 feet from the northwest corner of the foundation. I guessing 100 feet from the puddle to the meter. Trickle meter is running but not real fast.

Shovel in hand ... how do you find the broken pipe? I know gravity and watershed will play tricks on you. Suggestions on finding the broken pipe?

Thanks!

Without knowing much more than what you posted, and assuming you don't have a method to detect the location of your water line, I'd start at the puddle, since depending on the leak, soil type and grade, the water will collect like that until it saturates the area.

I don't suppose you have buried gutter lines that vent to the yard away from the foundations?

A sprinkler system?

Thanks Ladas for replying.

No sprinkler system. I think my water line runs down the fence line (under a row of red tip photinias that are at least 20 feet tall). I have no clue where it turns to go to the house. I know I have a 2nd line that goes to the acre in the back. Looking at the grade, I don't think the spot where its accumulating would be the lowest spot if it was leaking at the fence line. Nothing along the fence line is wet. I've walked around the foundation and that one corner is the only place that is showing water accumulation.

Sorry ... I'm no good at paint.

Here's a visual reference. It probably doesn't help with the grading issue. Rainfall usually flows along the fence line behind the garage.

Looks like you are on a peninsula that is pretty sparely populated, except for the camper/mobile home park to the east of you.

I can't imagine that the water is flowing too far from the point of the leak given the terrain.

Is the house slab on grade? or is there is a crawl space? If it is slab on grade, when was it built?

edit: directionally disfunctional

It's in the back yard near the tip of the roof shadow. The drain field goes further into the back yard.

It's a slab foundation on a grade. I think its level. I have not had any problems with the foundation. (knock on wood)

The house was built in 1983.

Well, I think then the best bet is contact the utility, though if the leak is on your side of the meter, which it appears to be, they will charge you. However, if its a supply line to the house and you damage it checking yourself, they will charge you a lot more.

I called the Texas "call before you dig" number. They are supposed to send me a map of the underground utilities. When I had the leak at the meter fixed, I had a new shutoff value and pressure regulator installed. It's definitely on my side.

What would be the indicators if the leak is coming from under the foundation?

In the 80s, most contractors either placed the water supply lines directly under, or inside, the concrete slabs, so if one of those lines has ruptured, you would likely have noticed wet spots on the floor first. Taking a wild stab at the layout based upon the roof plan, I'm guessing that corner of the house is either the den/living room, or a bed room, which chances are high the floors are either carpet or wood, which would make noticing a wet area pretty easy. Even if its tile, the grout lines would darken where water was seeping under.

But I don't think its a leak under the slab. It could be, but I think its unlikely.

I have a porch that wraps around that side of the house (about 3 ft wide - tiled). There is a wetbar in the corner of the house. I'll check the carpet.

Yea, she did this.. unfortunately, they will only check for leaks up to the meter. This problem appears to be on the premises side, so she's on her own with finding a plumber, who'll charge horrendous hourly rates in 15 minute blocks...

And to quote Teek from gchat this morning, regarding the local water district...

What is squirrel gravy and what do you serve it over?

Where is the meter? Mine is in my basement.

Squirrel gravy is something the hillbillies get from cooking up the squirrels they just shot from the front porch lazy boy.

Best served over fresh baked bisquits

You know, it *was* a standard comment of mine back in my college days that the squirrels on the quad were so tame you could stalk and hunt them with a pocketknife...

Never said I couldn't shoot a squirrel, I just don't support gun ownership. I could also knife a squirrel but I never would.

Why do you hate squirrels so violently?
