I had no clue he was still with us.

He had a good long life, honored for so many accomplishments, respected by the greats in the game, and was a class act.

I remember seeing him interviewed shortly after the 88 game streak was broken. When asked what he thought about it, he said congratulatory words to the team that beat them, praised the young men who had contributed to the streak, then finished with, ''it will take the next team at least four years to beat it."

Rest in peace Coach, you earned it.

He was kind of hard to avoid if you live in Los Angeles, I was well aware that he was still with us. What I didn't realize is that he had been a pretty good player before becoming a coach. Won a (voted) national championship with Purdue in 1932, as well as his state (Indiana) championship in high school. Played pro ball (while coaching on the side), and at one point made 134 consecutive free throws. Pretty interesting.

Was a wise, wise man. A great coach who taught kids to play the right way.

His Seven Point Creed.

* Be true to yourself.
* Make each day your masterpiece.
* Help others.
* Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
* Make friendship a fine art.
* Build a shelter against a rainy day.
* Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.

They don't make them like that any more.
