Sorry dude.

I'm pretty sure facetime is an open standard.

Also, Im pretty sure they explicitly said it was wifi for now, not for ever.

I only skim read a writeup tho ;-p

Emphasis mine, from your article, Sui. I get edgy when anybody unilaterally declares they'll make an industry standard, because that says nothing about licensing fees, openness of the standard, or whether it's needed or wanted.

Now, looking up some early data on FaceTime, it appears it uses H.264 for its video streaming, which is an open standard, but that doesn't mean that Apple's releasing the other necessary pieces openly, like connection initiation and negotiation protocols.

As I said, I'll be surprised if Apple doesn't charge licensing fees for other devices/software that want to interoperate with FaceTime, just because creating "open standards" in-house hasn't exactly been a prime concern, policy-wise, lately.

This. But it will be nice to have the extra space on my new 16gb iPhone 4.

I talked to AT&T today. You can absolutely keep your existing unlimited data plan, but there is a catch. If you are like me, and have an old 2G iPhone, with the old $20/month data plan, you'll have to switch, since that plan is "not compatible" with the new 3G phones/plans. And since that plan is no longer offered, I'll have to switch to the $25/month for 2GB data plan. However, if I had a $30/month data plan, I could keep that unlimited plan. You only have to switch to the new data plans if your hardware requires it. For now, anyway.

That's actually ok for me, because I've never gone over 500MB of data usage per month, anyway. I use WiFi whenever possible.

Back to the iPhone 4, I can't wait until I can pre-purchase mine on the 15th. The new display looks AMAZING! I'm also really curious how the new gyroscope will work out.

Awesome! I assume you or Phe already have Plants vs. Zombies for iOS, but if not, I do recommend it (though I have not sprung for HD.)

Let me know if you want a link talking about Mobile Safari limits.

Settings > General > Usage has a data usage statistic.

I don't use 2 GB / month on iPhone. Your mileage may vary.

Keep in mind it only shows cellular network data usage, not wifi.

You can also dial *3282# (*DATA#) on your phone and it will send you a msg that shows your data usage.

Well, I could save myself 5 bucks. The most I've used in a month is 384 MB. I can slide down to the the 2G a month offer and be OK. I want a new phone.

Honey!!!!!!!

Tell them you're happy staying on EDGE and you should be ok ;-p I had to change my plan in the UK, but only to go from EDGE to 3G - it was a different tariff & SIM enabling thingybob.

I would crush the 2GB limit. And tethering is another $20? Lame

If the iPhone 4 had a real display and hardware arsenal to stand up, they might have an edge besides an established app market, which could easily swing in momentum in the duration of a contract.

The new 4.3" screen on the Evo is a beauty to behold and I'm still waiting to see what the Super AMOLED is going to look like on the larger Samsung Galaxy S.

FYI, I talked to an ATT rep earlier.

While the unlimited $30 plan is going away, the new available plans ($15 for 200mb, $25 for 2gb) will have a rate of $10 per GB over 2GB for the $25 plan.

I don't really how this is going to slow down usage ... I would only have to pay about $5-15 more a month (not accounting for the 20% I get on all data) to get the data usage I have now: 3-4 GB/month.

Now, this may force me to cut down to 2GB (were I switch off unlimited), but I really don't see $10/gb/month standing in the way of others.

Typing this from my new iPad now. I happened to do a random call check, and the MacAuthority in town had a 64 GB 3G model in stock, so I rushed down and picked it up.

This thing is SO damn cool.

I started off not wanting one, then for whatever reason I had a burning desire for that exact config...

Then I physically picked one up and played with it for a bit and noticed how heavy it was... and thought long and hard about the $1000 it would cost...and ended up talking myself out of love with it.

It does have some heft to it...but I've taken to browsing the 'net at home on my iPod Touch (at first mainly because Phe is constantly stealing my MacBook Pro :P), and I really enjoy the tactile nature of it. Plus, this pretty much eliminates the need for additional entertainment during travel; the iPad (and the iPod Touch before it) serves as video player, iPod, gaming system, book, etc...

Plus, I think this is my favorite way ever to read comics. :D

Would you think this if you hadn't been iPhone deprived for the past 2 years or whatever you've been stuck with Alltel?

Yeah...I had almost all of the functionality of the iPhone on my iPod Touch, but this is still an awesome device, really in its own class.

Just pre-ordered my 16GB iPhone 4 from AT&T's website. When I placed the order, it told me my old data plan was not compatible, but it gave me the option to switch to the $30/month unlimited data plan. So apparently, you really can keep your unlimited data plan, and it's only new customers who are being forced to choose the new tiered plans.

I ALMOST got the 32GB one, but I chose the 16GB instead. I've never filled up my 8GB. But with higher resolution photos, and 720p video, I can imagine it will be much easier to fill up now.

Anyone else get their's ordered yet?

I ordered one. Then, after I paid, I noticed I put in the wrong address. "2260" is NOT "2660," no matter what my typing fingers think.

Now the AT&T site is down and I have an order to fix.

So tempted to order one. I think I'm going for the 16 GB model as well if I do. I'm really on the fence. My 3G is ready to be upgraded, but at the same time I really don't need it and I sort of wanted to save up some money for some things. Decisions, decisions. *sigh*

I want one...but I'm 6 months from being able to buy an AT&T subsidized phone. Too many other things vying for my money's attention right now, so I'll be waiting for a little longer.

EDIT: I'd purposefully been avoiding the hype on the iPhone 4's new features. I just went to apple's site and now I have a serious case of "Iwantitnowitis"

Are you sure?
