I did not say that they were not shared beyond the individual. We gain our understanding of connotation from observing what connotations they seem to ahve to others. They just cannot be precisely defined or limited in the way the dictionary definition is. There is no precise way of saying how strong a connotation is, or how much it encompasses. There are large grey areas. Clearly, however, they must be shared.

Actually, the dictionary is a pretty good indicator of where connotation lies in the language spectrum. The more widespread and sign limited a particular connotation becomes, the more likely it is to show up in a dictionary. Now, we can suggest that a dictionary is merely the marker of denotative language, but that's not always true.

Not always, but I think it is generally true. When a connotation becomes so strong it is in the dictionary, the word is at or close to acquiring that as a denotational meaning.

I would ask, if speculation carried a common connotation of a "wild" and perhaps uneducated guess, why would it be necessary to defend oneself by having to openly state it.
