Watched it with my TKD Studio (we arranged a private showing)

Had a good time, enjoyed the show. Felt a little creepy being the single guy with no kid there with all the families, but since I do help teach the youth class fairly often that isn't TOO creepy right?

on the other hand, the movie was good. (longish) Lot of nods to the original, (and what looked like a shout out to Back to the Future which came out about the same time, right?) predictable of course, since its almost exactly the same as the original, (couple of scenes might as well be word for word) still was fun.

I hate to be a negative nelly, but: this is not the same as the original, and spits not only on Pat Morita's grave, but is solely a vehicle for Will Smith to plug his kid.

Please don't anybody contribute any money to this travesty of a remake.

saw the trailor when i went to watch prince of persia... can't say I'm too excited. But I think thats just cause personally I don't like jackie chan...

Thanks for the warning. I'm highly considering staying away from this and A team as the last untouched vestiges of my childhood.

This is why I'm not going to see this movie. The Karate Kid is one of my favorite movies of all time and it just won't be the same without Pat Morita. They seriously should have left this one alone.

I'd agree... and I'll also go so far as to say the same thing about the most recent star trek movie. There were so many other things they could have done with the franchise.

I should clarify: my statement above is merely my opinion. I will not see it because I don't want to put money in the pockets of the people who made the piece of ****.

FFS.... they openly say they're teaching him Kung Fu... in a movie titled "The Karate Kid."

Furthermore, considering the child has moved to China and it features Jackie Chan as his instructor: 1) Is Jackie Chan supposed to be Mr. Miyagi? 2) If he is supposed to be Mr. Miyagi, how do they explain an Okinawan living in China? 3) If he is an Okinawan living in China, why the blue hell is he a kung fu master? 4) If he isn't an Okinawan, but is (as I suspect) a Chinese man living in China, how in hell will they create the same "fish out of water" bond between him and Daniel-san?

That's just for starters....

Wow, that's a little rough. I didn't feel like the new star trek was the best ever, but it was an excellent restart of the franchise allowing them to move forward.

in other words DFK has not SEEN the movie and is therefor offering an opinion not based on the film but out of his resentment of it.


Those of us who actually SAW the movie seem to have liked it.

Jackie Chan is supposed to be Chinese. He's not Okinawan, or Japanese. He is Mr. Han, not Mr. Miyagi.

Yes, the plot is virtually identical, yes some scenes are the same.

Yes, I resent that Will Smith needed a vehicle for his kid, and therefore took a successful, fun, entertaining, and in some ways educational kids film from the 80's and raped it.

You appear to be missing the point: the plot literally cannot be identical as too many critical factors have changed.

OK, gonna weigh in to say that I haven't seen it, but my wife took the kids to see it last week. And guess who wants to go back to karate? My five-year old. He did it for a bit last summer, and lost interest (his 8-year old sister, however, has stuck with it). So, that's something good that came out of it.

I should probably 'fess up and say that I also never saw the original until a month or two ago. It was meh. I see where all the cultural referents come from now, at least. The thing that this movie has, from my perspective (and maybe I'm just drinking the Kool-Aid), is that Jaden Smith really is into martial arts. So, at least it's not like he was forced into it by his dad.

So there is no bully with a 50 year old lady's smoker voice constantly making the sounds "A-yah a-yah! A-yah a-yah!"

I love the original KK. But I am intrigued enough to watch the new movie. If you love the original, then nobody can take that away from you. It's not like this movie is going to re-format your brain and replace the memories of the original with this one.

My kids' dojo is going on a field trip to see it this weekend, so that's where I'll be on Saturday. As a less-than-enthusiastic viewer of this first one, I'm not sure how I'm gonna react to this one.
