Janis Joplin

"Mercedes Benz"

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV?

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town?
I'm counting on you, Lord, please don't let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town?

Everybody!
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?

That's it!

<3 Janis.

Also, a bit of trivia: "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" (and, in fact, most of Dr. Hook's repertoire) was written by famed poet and children's book author Shel Silverstein (A Light in the Attic). So too was Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue."

I love Shel Silverstein. Where the sidewalk ends, The giving tree, etc.

Me too. Memorized tons of his poetry when I was a kid. Two of my favs....

"There's too many kids in this tub
there's too many elbows to scrub.
I just washed a behind
that I'm sure wasn't mine
there's too many kids in this tub."

and

"My beard grows to my toes
I never wears no clothes
I wraps my hair
around my bare
and down the road I goes."

They've put a brassiere on a camel,
She wasn't dressed proper, you know.
They've put a brassiere on a camel,
So that her humps wouldn't show.
And they're making other respectable plans,
They're even even insisting the pigs should wear pants,
They'll dress up the ducks if we give them the chance
Since they've put a brassiere on a camel.
They've put a brassiere on a camel,
They claim she's more decent that way.
They've put a brassiere on a camel,
The camel had nothing to say.
They squeezed her into it, i'll never know how,
They say that she looks more respectable now,
Lord knows what they've got in mind for the cow,
Since they've put a brassiere on a camel.

why are children obsessed with the min/max of things. My child is always asking "Whats the fastest X, or how many times can Y?"

He shot that poor boy so bad, the bullet went through Billy and broke the bartenders Glass.

Staggerlee Sheldon and Billy Lyons were real people, it wasn't just a made up incident to write a song about. The shooting happened in 1895. Most people singing it today have no clue that both of them were political organizers for different parties, among other things. Staggerlee was a pimp and Billy was a levee worker.

Not messing with a pimp's hat is a lesson from way back then.
