That's why you don't play with random people? I mean, honestly...why would you want to play with someone you don't know? I mean on the same team.

Because it's a way to open yourself to new playstyles?
Because sometimes it beats the hell out of trying to schedule games with people you know?
Because it's a challenge?
Because it's a way to break out of ruts?

There're lots of good reasons to do so.

Yeah. None of those reasons sound good to me. But, to each their own. It's bad enough having to predict what your opponents are going to do, I don't need the added stress of having to guess what my own team mate is going to do.

Which is exactly why you use voice chat. No more guessing. And it's a helluva lot easier to coordinate a strategy with voice than by trying to type to your 2v2 partner.

If you play with the same partner every game, you'll obviously get very good at playing together. However, you can also become predictable. Let's face it, everyone tends to develop tendancies and standard practices. When you play with random partners, you get exposed to new potential strategies and playstyles. Or you see them do something that you never thought about yourself. It really is a good learning experience.

Only playing with a certain group of close-knit people, and shutting yourselves off from other players sounds like a really good way to lose interest very quickly.

2v2s are divided by random guy and set teams. I don't take the team games as seriously though, just because they aren't going to try balancing the game for 1v1 and all the team types. I can't really blame them.

I have RealID turned off for now. For most people, there's little point to it before SC2 or Diablo 3 come out. We'll see if I even make use of it then. I tend to fall into Raltar's point of view for online gaming stuffs.

That said... outside of not having some sort of Battle.net username in place of your own name, and some minor details beyond, I don't really see what's so bad about this that has made everyone angry. Battle.net has a pretty solid place in the history of online gaming, and with SC2 as well as Diablo3 in the relatively near future it's almost expected that Blizzard updates it. I see essentially a copy of the Steam system, or perhaps XBL, and I'd probably be surprised if they wouldn't have done something very similar.

I'm of half a mind to attribute the real name thing to some misguided concept that hasn't been thought through much: it's just like Facebook, and look how many people use that! Well, yeah, but Facebook is Facebook. For some reason it's different. It sounds sort of illogical for me to even type that*, but it is true all the same. I guess I'd rate a lot of my online friends that I'd want to add to a feature like that to be something more than almost all online friends and acquaintances, but most still wouldn't go beyond that. But again, I'm a guy that gets kinda bothered by having a few PUG members in a VoA raid, so perhaps I'm not the most balanced of folks to use my opinion as some sort of yardstick to judge by. Ultimately it just seems to me like they wanted to push things slightly more so it's not just a basic copy of some "here's about how online unified messaging systems work the last few years" system, to try and add to it... but I just don't see the actual benefit to being forced to use your real name.

Given that it's no surprise they're overhauling Battle.net's social aspects, it seems awfully tinfoil hatish to even bring up Kotick. Perhaps even my cynicism isn't up to snuff here (that or my sarcasm detector?), but it seems to go contrary to just about everything mentioned since the announcement of the merger. Influence for microtransactions or such I can see, but I'm just left confused here. Perhaps I haven't been keeping up well enough and am missing out on some information as a result, but since the merger it seems the guy is blamed for everything negative at Blizzard of any level above class balance, generally by people who have read that Blizzard was to remain fully independent.

*I was reading through this post quick before submitting and realize the amusing picture that sentence paints. I now imagine typing something so ludicrous the sounds of the keystrokes themselves are non sequiturs!

People were angry because they were under the impression that real ID would be forced upon everyone, but I've read blue posts to the contrary. The Real ID/facebook thing mostly just confuses me though. I don't even have a facebook, so I guess I wouldn't understand.

Nope, apparently Blizzard has gone Batshit Insane ...
Quote:
Recently, we introduced our new Real ID feature - http://www.battle.net/realid/ , a new way to stay connected with your friends on the new Battle.net. Today, we wanted to give you a heads up about our plans for Real ID on our official forums, discuss the design philosophy behind the changes we’re making, and give you a first look at some of the new features we’re adding to the forums to help improve the quality of conversations and make the forums an even more enjoyable place for players to visit.

The first and most significant change is that in the near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID -- that is, their real-life first and last name -- with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it. These changes will go into effect on all StarCraft II forums with the launch of the new community site prior to the July 27 release of the game, with the World of Warcraft site and forums following suit near the launch of Cataclysm. Certain classic forums, including the classic Battle.net forums, will remain unchanged.

The official forums have always been a great place to discuss the latest info on our games, offer ideas and suggestions, and share experiences with other players -- however, the forums have also earned a reputation as a place where flame wars, trolling, and other unpleasantness run wild. Removing the veil of anonymity typical to online dialogue will contribute to a more positive forum environment, promote constructive conversations, and connect the Blizzard community in ways they haven’t been connected before. With this change, you’ll see blue posters (i.e. Blizzard employees) posting by their real first and last names on our forums as well.

We also plan to add a number of other features designed to make reading the forums more enjoyable and to empower players with tools to improve the quality of forum discussions. Players will have the ability to rate up or rate down posts so that great topics and replies stand out from the not-so-great; low-rated posts will appear dimmer to show that the community feels that they don’t contribute effectively to the conversation, and Blizzard’s community team will be able to quickly and easily locate highly rated posts to participate in or to highlight discussions that players find worthwhile.

In addition, individual topics will be threaded by context, meaning replies to specific posts will be grouped together, making it easier for players to keep track of multiple conversations within a thread. We’re also adding a way for Blizzard posters to “broadcast” important messages forums-wide , to help communicate breaking news to the community in a clear and timely fashion. Beyond that, we’re improving our forum search function to make locating interesting topics easier and help lower the number of redundant threads, and we have more planned as well.

With the launch of the new Battle.net, it’s important to us to create a new and different kind of online gaming environment -- one that’s highly social, and which provides an ideal place for gamers to form long-lasting, meaningful relationships. All of our design decisions surrounding Real ID -- including these forum changes -- have been made with this goal in mind.

We’ve given a great deal of consideration to the design of Real ID as a company, as gamers, and as enthusiastic users of the various online-gaming, communication, and social-networking services that have become available in recent years. As these services have become more and more popular, gamers have become part of an increasingly connected and intimate global community – friendships are much more easily forged across long distances, and at conventions like PAX or our own BlizzCon, we’ve seen first-hand how gamers who may have never actually met in person have formed meaningful real-life relationships across borders and oceans. As the way gamers interact with one another continues to evolve, our goal is to ensure Battle.net is equipped to handle the ever-changing social-gaming experience for years to come.

For more info on Real ID, check out our Real ID page and FAQ located at http://www.battle.net/realid/ . We look forward to answering your questions about these upcoming forum changes in the thread below.

Thereby ensuring that I'll stick with Everquest. SoE has made plenty of boneheaded moves, but ensuring that I am forced to tie my name into the forums, etc? Not a chance.

Sure, it removes the veil of anonymity from posters... But it also removes the veil of anonymity! With some of the crazy people I've seen posting and playing, I can't wait for the first person who decides to look up the physical location of someone that is pissing them off online.

There's a reason there are virtually no forums out there that use peoples real First AND Last names for handles.

Wow, Real ID names on the forums? I'm with Nephyr, the first guy that gets shot because he flamed someone on the forums is going to make them rethink this...

*shrug* It's dumb, but I can't bring myself to care until/unless it becomes mandatory. Which it's not, and shows no signs of becoming (unless you count its very existence as a sign, which is fair enough, I s'pose).

It's mandatory if you want to post on the forums, Farsky.

Which, granted, could be avoided...

But I still consider that making it mandatory.

It can be avoided, yes. But what about the Customer Service and Tech Support forums?

Hence why I said I consider this move making it mandatory.

Heh, in 2 and a half hours or so, there are 1338 pages of overwhelmingly negative posts.

Even the ones that aren't *negative* are like "Lulz, what can someone do with your naem? QQ more whiney baby"

I've only seen a couple of "I support this idea"

Yeah. I like all the features *BUT* the Real ID in the forums. Some of them may be optional, but unless you plan on offering me 24/7 phone support, CS and Tech Support forums are not optional.

And what would make it all OK?

The use of an alias.

That's it. Simple. Why the hell don't they do that?

And the cynic in me saw this post on the thread:
Quote:
Don't worry guys, for $1.99/mo extra, you too can subscribe to battle.net gold edition which features IdentProtect!

And it all made sense.

I like the idea of cowards having no place to hide, as the forums are littered with them (usually because they don't want people to see that their character really does suck regardless of much they doth protest). But yeah... as soon as someone is shot, raped, or kidnapped (or all of the above) Blizzard is gonna have one hell of a time.

You could so easily remove the anonymity by simply requiring someone to post under the name of their "main" character- they say you will have the option of linking too it anyway.

It removes people from being able to post with no in-game repercussions, but it doesn't allow the possibility for out of game harassment.

I'm required to maintain pages with my contact info on them as a graduate student, so anyone with my full name could easily google me and find my e-mail address, office address, cell number, etc.

I don't mind the kids I tutor or TA having them, or even people that need to get in touch with me for some RL reason- that doesn't mean I want everyone I meet online to have them as well.

I was really fried with WoW, but since to get support you MUST post on the forums, and this will reveal my full name....well no, just no.

Blizzard is insane.

RealID will expose your real name to any addon, and thus potentially anyone. I'm definitely cancelling if they go through with this, I know of more than one hiring manager that automatically discards any applicant that they find out plays MMOs. Large numbers of resumes are already discarded by computer based on arbitrary criteria, there's no reason to give them another one that they can write a program to quickly search the Internet for.

Wow, really? Isn't that a bit discriminatory? It's none of his/her business what I choose to do at home in my spare time. I'd sure as hell be talking to a lawyer if I found out my app was refused because I chose to play an MMO.
